Work has begun on the Petone to Melling section

Together with our contractors, Fulton Hogan, we have now started work to build the Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua, the project to create a walking and cycling link between Wellington and Lower Hutt.

Initial work, including site investigation and preparation has started at the northern end of the project, around Melling and Normandale bridge. We're also preparing to build a new rail underpass at Parliament Street during the holiday period.

Underpass construction this holiday period

We are preparing to build an underpass beneath the rail line near Normandale Bridge as part of the Petone to Melling project.

The work will take place during the Christmas – New Year holiday period, when rail lines across the Wellington region will be shut down as KiwiRail carries out a major programme of maintenance and upgrade work. 

Part of Parliament Street in Lower Hutt will be closed during the underpass works, from Boxing Day for approximately one week, with a detour in place. There will also be restrictions to on-street parking during this time.

From Christmas Day, 25 December, to 5 January, train services will be replaced by buses across the Metlink train network. For more information on train services please visit the Metlink website.
