Be Bin-Smart and Battery-Safe Our recent summer awareness campaign "Be Bin-Smart and Battery-Safe" highlights the importance of properly recycling your used batteries, especially during the summer holiday period. Many of the gifts Australians love to exchange during this festive season, from toys and gadgets to decorations, rely on loose or portable batteries. But by the end of January, homes across the country accumulate used batteries, creating a hidden hazard. We've partnered with Cleanaway Waste Management to amplify the summer awareness campaign further. "Across the country, Cleanaway has been experiencing at least one battery-related fire a week in our trucks or facilities. These fires put the safety of both our team and the community at risk”, said Tracey Boyes, EGM Solid Waste Services at Cleanaway. Incidents of battery-related fires are rising across Australia, as warned by nearly every state and territory fire and rescue service. Speaking in support of the campaign, Queensland Fire Department Executive Manager Fire Safety Mark Halverson advised consumers that lithium-ion battery powered devices should only be purchased from reputable retailers. “Warning signs of a damaged device or battery include excessive heat production, significant change in colour, signs of smoke, battery swelling or leaking and odd noises. Lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in the household waste or recycling bin, instead they should be taken to a battery recycling location.” This campaign urges all Australians to protect their homes and loved ones this summer season by safely recycling their used batteries.
