1. Bridge anchor block in place

Story
Story

The East West Link Bridge across SH1 at Tamahere features two different abutments.

Under the western end of the bridge is a sloped abutment which has tiles arranged in in a cultural reference to Marariki, the river and the maunga.

The eastern abutment is a vertical retaining wall made from concrete piles extending deep into the ground. This retaining wall requires support from a concrete ‘deadman anchor'. This reinforced concrete structure has been constructed near the corner of Cherry Lane. 25 tensioned anchor bars will tie the anchor block to the retaining wall.

Once this is completed, a raised roundabout will be built on top of the anchor block to connect the bridge with Cherry Lane and Bollard Road.

2. Completing the foundation layers

The final foundation layers for the expressway are almost complete between Tamahere and Matangi.

Three layers of sand or rock are compacted and tested before drainage lines can be installed and road pavement construction can begin.

The relatively dry winter has allowed this work to progress quickly and make up some of the time lost from the effects of Covid-19.

3. Roading teams ready to roll

Our roading teams are preparing for a big summer of pavement construction and sealing.

The Hi-Lab blending plant has been relocated from Lake Road to Puketaha and will be producing our special rock blend by the end of September.

The photo below shows our team assembling a relocatable asphalt plant at Ruakura to supply the final seal for this 22km four-lane expressway.

4. More planting in the Mangaonua Gully

By October, we’ll be finished planting and restoring a section of the Mangaonua Gully, near SH26 Morrinsville Road.

Planting is complete on the northern side of the gully, and planting is now under way on the southern bank.
