Hamilton section project update May 2021

It comes out of the ground and won’t go away – so the project team has had to come up with a solution to a thick red sludge affecting drainage on part of the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway.
An 880m section south of Ruakura Interchange has been raised to escape the reach of iron ochre which has invaded the underground pipes and channels.
The sludge is a bi-product of iron-oxidising bacteria living in the water draining from the embarkments.
The design change and works are explained in the latest project update.
There’s also a look at the work to extend Resolution Drive out to the interchange. This includes cycling and walking connections, with an underpass under Resolution Drive.
As the project heads towards completion we have rejigged the centrespread words and photos to provide a whole-of-project view from north to south.
