Consents lodged for Stage 1B2 of the project

We are pleased to advise that our Notice of Requirement and Resource Consent applications have been lodged for the final stage (Stage 1B2) of the SH1 Papakura to Drury project under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020 (the FTA).

The Papakura to Drury project is being consented under the FTA, which was introduced in 2020 to accelerate projects that will create significant employment opportunities and provide a boost to local economies.

Stage 1B1 of the project was previously consented under the FTA in 2021.  Stage 1B2 was separated out from Stage 1B1 to allow appropriate time and consideration of the project's impact on Oopaheke, an identified site of cultural significance spanning both sides of the motorway at Otuuwairoa / Slippery Creek.

A site of cultural significance is a place and/or feature that is of historical, cultural and/or spiritual significance to Māori.  Oopaheke is a site of significance to Mana Whenua due to its history as a pā (fortified village) and papakāinga (village).  This site has been scheduled and protected in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP) due to its significance to Mana Whenua.

Lodging our consents for Stage 1B2 is a significant step forward for the project and we look forward to our applications being considered in the months ahead.

Stage 1B2 details

Stage 1B2 of the project includes the following features:

  • a shared walking and cycling path alongside the motorway (linking the two ends of the path consented last year as part of Stage 1B1)
  • a shared path connection to Great South Road on the northern side of Otuuwairoa / Slippery Creek
  • an additional (third) motorway lane in each direction
  • improved safety and environmental features
  • the replacement and lifting of the motorway bridges over Otuuwairoa / Slippery Creek in response to flood modelling and to provide resilience from the effects of climate change.

Overall, the SH1 Papakura to Drury project will support existing and fast-growing communities in South Auckland, with improvements to connectivity, accessibility, travel choices, safety and environmental management.

More information about the project is available on the project website at www.nzta.govt.nz/p2b
