Student tips What you need to know about the changes to Temporary Graduate visa programFrom 1 July 2024, the length of post-study work visas has changed. However, Australia’s Temporary Graduate visa will still give you time to gain valuable work experience and demonstrate your skills to Australian employers. The 2024 Australian minimum wage increaseThe Australian Government's Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.75% increase in the minimum wage, effective from 1 July 2024. The new National Minimum Wage is now $24.10 per hour. As an international student, you are protected by Australia's workplace laws. If you are paid less than the minimum wage, inform the Fair Work Ombudsman. Income tax obligations for international students working in AustraliaIf you're an overseas student enrolled in a course in Australia lasting 6 months or more, you may be classified as an Australian resident for tax purposes. As a resident, you're required to declare all income earned in Australia on your Australian tax return. If you're working while studying, ensure you understand the relevant considerations. Stay safe on country roads: Watch out for wildlife and livestockWildlife, wild horses (brumbies), and livestock on roads can increase risks for motorists. One out of every 41 injuries or fatal crashes on country roads involves a vehicle colliding with an animal. As you explore our beautiful country this winter, prioritise safety for yourself, your passengers, and native wildlife. Stay vigilant, heed animal warning signs, and reduce speed for animals on country roads. Stay safe: Winter cooking tips for food hygieneWhen preparing your winter recipes, prioritise food safety! Salmonellosis, caused by Salmonella bacteria, can result from contaminated food or contact with infected individuals. Wash your hands thoroughly before cooking to prevent contamination. Student spotlight Shivwani's NSW journey: From Summer escapes to future goalShivwani's favourite memory in NSW was her summer road trip to Jervis Bay, where she experienced an escape from city life. She enjoys studying in NSW thanks to the efficient public transport, and the unique mix of cosmopolitan city life with access to relaxing mountains and oceans. In the future, Shivwani sees herself growing into a managerial role in marketing for the non-for-profit sector, where she could give back to communities in NSW. “I recommend getting university accommodation by putting through an early application before you receive your offer letter.
