Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road to the Heads, and its side roads remain restricted to residents, emergency and essential services. 

Daytime closures continue on Kenepuru Road, 20km from the start of the road from Onahau Road, where work on a retaining wall at the Water Tank Slip site is underway. Closures are planned on weekdays from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm, with a 3.30pm finish on Fridays. Please see the road closure section for more information. 

Work continues at several sites on Kenepuru Road between Onahau Road and The Heads.

A closure is also planned on Moetapu Bay Road, from 21 October from 9am to 3pm, with openings on the hour. Work to undertake a road retreat and drainage improvements on Driftwood Corner will be completed under the closure. Please see the road closure section for more detail.

The new bridge upstream of the current temporary bailey bridge on Waihopai Valley Road is progressing with the bridge superstructure taking form. 

Please ensure you keep to the reduced temporary speed limits when travelling through worksites to ensure the safety of our crews and road users. We thank you for your patience.

Road closures

 
 

Moetapu Bay Road - Driftwood corner

Moetapu Bay Road, 1.6km from the start of the road will be closed to all traffic on weekdays from 9am to 3pm with hourly openings from Monday 21 October for two weeks.

The closures are for the first stage of work for a road retreat, drainage improvements and road reinstatement. This work will also be carried out under stop/go traffic management, outside of the closure times outlined above. Please expect delays.

Kenepuru Road - Water Tank slip

Kenepuru Road from the Onahau Road intersection is closed to all traffic from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm Monday to Thursday. On Friday the closure will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

There are the following planned changes to the scheduled closures on Kenepuru Road: 

  • On Wednesday 16 October the closure will be in place from 10am.
  • On Friday 18 October there will be no road closure, with the closures planned to resume from 12.30pm on Monday 21 October

The closures are for the construction of a 98m retaining wall at the Water Tank slip site, along with drainage upgrades and road reinstatement. The road closure timings will be reviewed after the first stage of works are completed. Works will be undertaken outside of these days and times under stop/go traffic management with up to 15 minute delays. If you have any concerns, please contact recovery@marlboroughroads.com.

 

 

Kenepuru Road Restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road to the Heads, and its side roads, Moetapu Bay Road and Te Mahia Road continue to be restricted to residents, emergency and essential services.

These roads have severe storm damage and entry into this section of Kenepuru Road is at resident and emergency or essential service drivers' discretion.

Residents only are permitted to walk and cycle on roads which are restricted to residents.

The following vehicle restrictions remain on Kenepuru Road from Linkwater to the Heads:

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and the following side roads; Mahau Road, Torea Road and Moetapu Bay Road as far as Double Bay Reserve.

This allows residents access to boat launching areas at Double Bay Reserve, Torea and Portage.

On all other side roads, between Kenepuru Road to the Heads no vehicles over 8m in length or 3.5 tonne in weight are permitted.

The following restrictions also apply on Kenepuru Road and it's side roads including Moetapu Bay Road;

  • No campervans, vans or buses.
  • Only 4WD and light vehicles.

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road;

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Extreme care should be exercised and daylight driving only is strongly recommended.

Resident Definition:

The definition of a resident, in terms of who is able to access roads restricted to resident and emergency services is;

A permanent resident, owner of a holiday home/bach, or the owner of a commercial interest.

It does not include visitors who are hiring or renting a holiday home or bach, where rental arrangements have been made through either a property letting agency or directly with the owner.

Other Recovery Roads

Please be aware that on all roads, including those with public access, there may be areas of works and traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads needing to be closed urgently. No matter the status of the road, drive to the conditions.

French Pass

 
 

Progress continues on the construction of a new retaining wall, 5km from Okiwi Bay on the Croisilles-French Pass Road. H-Pile drilling is nearing completion and following this the team will begin installing timber lagging before backfilling the wall. The traffic lights at this site will be removed once the remedial works have been completed.

The construction of a MSE (Mechanically Stabilised Earth) wall was completed last week, 300m prior to the Croisilles Road and Wharf Road intersection.  A new sight rail has been installed and preparations for the road are now complete. This section of road will be resealed in the next couple of weeks.

Work on a culvert installation on Hope Drive, Okiwi Bay began this week. This work is being carried out under stop/go traffic management, please plan ahead for minor delays.

Work to install a box culvert on Ronga Road is scheduled to start on 21 October. This work will be under stop/go traffic management with delays of up to 15 minutes expected.

Kenepuru Road

 
 

Daytime closures remain on Kenepuru Road, from Onahau Road, Monday to Thursday 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm. On Fridays the closure will be in place 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm. These closures are for the construction of a retaining wall, drainage improvements and road reinstatement, 20km from the start of the road at the Water Tank slip site. Please refer to the road closure section for further information.

Work on the retaining wall at Water Tank slip continues this week, with the first span of piles for the base of the wall, now concreted into place. Weather permitting, pile installation will be completed by the end of next week. 

Progress continues  near Torea, prior to Portage on Kenepuru Road where a new retaining wall is taking shape. The timber board facing (lagging) has been installed. The crews are currently backfilling the retaining wall in stages, in coordination with the installation of timber support poles.

Scheduled pavement repair work along Titirangi Road was completed last week.

The team have been working this week to clear a slip, 1km before the Lawrence Road turn off on Kenepuru Road, prior to Portage. Please plan ahead for minor delays while this work is completed.

Please note we are currently undertaking unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveying of Kenepuru Road. The UAV surveys topographical features of the road and surrounding slopes/slips to inform designs.

Moetapu Bay

 
 

Work on a road retreat, drainage improvements and road reinstatement at Driftwood Corner, 1.6km from the start of Moetapu Bay Road is scheduled to begin on Monday 21 October. Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

Road sealing was completed at three sites last week with the crews demobilising as works at these sites are now finished. To maximise efficiency, linemarking at these sites is scheduled to be undertaken with other sites along Queen Charlotte Drive before Christmas.

Construction of a new retaining wall, between Momorangi and Ngakuta Bay started this week. Drilling and installation of rail irons is underway. These works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management, please plan ahead for minor delays.

Work is scheduled to start 7km from Picton above Whenuanui (Becks Bay) in coming weeks, to realign the road and complete minor remedial works.

Rai Valley

 
 

This week the team have established onsite on Opouri Road. The team will be installing two new culverts along the road and will widen the water table in areas. Once this work is completed they will look to prepare the road surface for resealing.

 

 

Waihopai Valley

 
 

Progress continues on the new bridge on Waihopai Valley Road this week with the guardrails installed on the spans currently in place.

Due to weather restrictions and the river rising, a number of bridge spans are still to be installed. Work on the approach to the bridge from the existing road remains scheduled to begin later in the month.

The current bailey bridge will continue to operate as crews build the new bridge. Please expect increased activity around this area.
