New location for the site office

The project site office is currently located in Tarewa Park.  So that we can complete footpaths and landscaping of the park, the site office will be relocated to the carpark area on the opposite site of SH1 in late June or early July.

The “black stuff”

Much of the new road surface has been laid.  All that remains to finish it off is a small section at the northern end of the project, six metres either side of the bridge and the bridge itself.

Paving at the northern end of the project will be completed over two or three nights in late June/early July (weather permitting) and paving the bridge and either side of it will be completed when all bridge works are finished.

New Otaika Road Bridge

There are 16 bridge beams required to complete the new bridge.  As each beam is completed, it will be transported by truck from Auckland to Whangarei.

The beams will be stored on site and lifted into place in early July.  The only area large enough to accomodate beams about 22.5m in length is an area on Tarewa Road just before the intersection.  An additional advantage to storing the beams here is its proximity to the new bridge site.

Lifting the bridge beams into place will be done overnight in early July and it will take about four nights to complete this work.

This will be a significant milestone for the project.

No right turns out of Tarewa Road

As work on the intersection nears completion, we have been asked when vehicles will able to turn right out of Tarewa Road again.

We would like to remind people that, following public consultation last year, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency made the decision to introduce a bylaw permanently banning right turns out of Tarewa Road.

For those wanting to turn right, use the SH1 (Western Hills Drive)/SH14 (Maunu Road) intersection.  Banning right turns will improve the efficiency of the intersection and off-set potential delays caused by the new traffic lights.

Better connectivity, improved safety

When completed, the SH1/Tarewa Road intersection upgrade will improve traffic flow and safety in this location. It will also make it safer for people who want to walk or ride bikes.

The new shared path under the bridge and signalised pedestrian crossings at the intersection will provide people with real travel choices and better connections to other local walking and cycling paths, the Whāngārei Hospital, Northland Polytech and the CBD.

More people walking and riding bikes is better for their health and the environment.  It also helps reduce vehicle emissions and congestion.
