Annual SSCCC March in March

On March 3, 2014, over 500 students marched on the State Capitol during the SSCCC's March in March. These students understood that their voice was critical to change state policies that affect students. As one student quoted in the Santa Barbara City College student newspaper "The Channels" noted about the march:

“We have people from all walks of life today. I ask you to remember that before anything else we are students and we have the right, and we have the power, and we have the voice,” said Hector Rio, student speaker.

Students were not the only ones marching! Faculty and administrators joined their students to demonstrate support of their demands for California community college funding. As Dean Allison Curtis noted in the same article:

“The march in March is a great student advocacy event. It allows students from all over the state and various institutions to have their concerns heard by the legislators. To have their opinions and concerns raised by in a community with students from all over the state” said Allison Curtis, dean of Student Services.

The pandemic has limited the student voice on local campuses and in policy discussions. However, students still have the power to bring their voices and their stories to Sacramento. The SSCCC is again holding its annual March in March on March 15th. We are encouraging students, faculty, and administrators to share student concerns as we march on the State Capitol. This is an excellent way to use your college's student representation fee to rent buses, pay for hotel stays, or provide transportation.

Watch for more information about March in March soon! If you have any questions, please contact our Vice President of Legislative Affairs Prasad at vpla@ssccc.org.
