Kia ora Welcome to our first Otago state highway planned roadworks newsletter covering Tuesdays to Mondays. This change means you get the latest information at the start of the week, making it easier to plan your highway travels. The Tuesday to Monday newsletter continues until the current construction season ends in April. To stay up to date anytime you want visit our Journey Planner. All highway roadworks pause for the Christmas and New Year holiday break, with contractors closing their sites from midday Friday 19 December, and returning early on Monday 5 January. Long-term sites may have ongoing restrictions in place.

Dunedin to ChristchurchSH1 Dunedin to Palmerston: Road repairs will take place from 8 to 12 December, Monday to Friday, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 Bushey Park (near Palmerston): Preparation work for a road rebuild is being carried out from 8 to 19 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 Kakaho Creek: Preparation work for a road rebuild will take place from 8 to 19 December, Monday to Friday, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 Pukeuri: A road rebuild is underway until 19 December, 7 days a week, 6am to 4pm. Stop/go and lane shifts are in place, with a 30 km/h temporary speed limit. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes. SH1 Glenavy to Makikihi: Pavement and surfacing repairs will take place on weekdays from 7am to 6pm. Stop/go traffic management and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 Timaru, Evans Street / Grants Road: Taitarakihi Culvert replacement works are continuing. Crews have moved to the western side of the highway. Access to Grants Road will be closed 24 hours a day during this stage. Please use alternative side streets to reach SH1. SH1 Timaru to Rakaia: Pavement and surfacing repairs will take place at various locations on weekdays from 7am to 6pm. The sites will operate under daytime stop/go traffic management with a 30 km/h temporary speed limit. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes. SH1 at the Heslerton Road intersection: Resurfacing work will take place from 14 to 16 December near the Synlait Milk Factory. On Sunday 14 December, traffic management will include a lane closure on SH1 with stop/go in place, and delays of up to 10 minutes are expected. Parkins Road will be closed with no access to or from the state highway. Access to the rail crossing and Synlait from State Highway 1 will be closed from 7pm to 5.30am. On Monday 15 December, three-way manual traffic control will be in place on SH1 and Heslerton Road, and Parkins Road will remain closed. SH1 Between Dunns Crossing Road and Burnham: Chip sealing and road marking will take place on until 14 December. Some work will run under stop/go traffic lights. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will apply during the day from 2 to 14 December. SH1 Rolleston at the intersection with Dunns Crossing Road: Entry to Dunns Crossing Road from SH1 will remain closed for up to two weeks, reopening for the Christmas break. SH76 Christchurch Southern Motorway: Night works from 29 October to 18 December, 7pm to 5am. Crews are adding 4.6 km of barrier and maintenance bays between Wrights Road and Halswell Junction Road. No delays are expected.

SH1 North of Milton: Look out for contractors carrying out drainage maintenance from Tuesday 9 to 16, excluding weekends, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 North Milton: Road surface sealing will take place on 8 and 9 December, 9am to 3pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 Gore to Pukerau: High-pressure water cutting will improve grip and skid resistance. Work will run from 8 to 12 December, from 5.30am to 4pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. Work will occur at various locations. SH1 South Balclutha Clinton highway: Road sealing from 10 to 12 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH93 Mataura to Clinton: High-pressure water cutting to improve grip and skid resistance of the road surface. Crews on site from 8 to 12 December, 5.30am to 4pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH93 Mataura to Clinton: Road repairs will take place from 8 to 10 December, 8am to 5pm. Expect delays of up to 5 minutes. The work is near River and Old Manse Roads. SH1 Mataura to Invercargill: Road repairs will take place from 8 to 12 December, 8am to 5pm. Expect delays of up to 5 minutes. Work will occur at various locations.

Dunedin to QueenstownSH1 Allanton: Roadside enabling work will take place from 8 December, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 North of Milton: Drainage maintenance will take place from 9 to 16 December, excluding weekends, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH1 North Milton: Road sealing will take place on 8 and 9 December, 9am to 3pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH8 Stableburn (south of Millers Flat): A 3km road rebuild is underway and will continue until 9 April 2026, Monday to Friday, 7 am to 6pm. Road sealing is planned to start this week. The work will extend the life of the road and completed n five stages to reduce delays. Work is currently in stage two. A full holiday shutdown will run from 19 December to 12 January. SH6 Kawarau Gorge: Emergency works will take place from 8 to 14 December to clear material from a recent weather event. Work will run Monday to Sunday, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH6 Queenstown (Lake Hayes Estate): Tree removal and relocation of power lines and wastewater services will take place until 11 December on Howards Drive. Access to and from Howards Drive will be closed from 8pm to 6am each night. Please use the detour via Stalker Road.

Work on other key Otago highwaysSH6 Muddy and Brady Creeks (near Makarora): Emergency works will continue until 14 December, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6 pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes. SH8 Bendigo (between Cromwell and Tarras): Preparations for the final stage of this road rebuild, scheduled to start on the 13th January 2026. Work will be carried out from 9 to 18 December, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of about 5 minutes. SH83 Awamoko: Highway rebuild enabling work will take place from 8 to 19 December, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes. SH85 Palmerston–Dunback Road: The highway rebuild will continue until 19 December, Monday to Friday, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes. SH90 Raes Junction to Waipahi Highway: High-pressure water cutting to improve road grip and skid resistance will continue until 19 December, Monday to Sunday, 6am to 7pm. Expect delays of around 5 minutes.
