Thanks for your feedback

As a result of engagement with the community, we've made some changes to our plans to make it safer and easier to get around Tinwald.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to get in touch - your feedback was assessed, and further analysis was undertaken.

Key changes as a result of community feedback include:

  • removing the proposed raised safety platform at the signalised intersection
  • refining the intersection and signal design
  • better provision for pedestrians and cyclists to get to school and along Melcombe Street - under the rail viaduct - and through to the Ashburton River Bridge.

An engagement report with responses to common concerns is now available online.

What the improvements will mean

The improvements shown in the map below will make it easier and safer for people to get to the shops, local businesses, school and community facilities across the highway and rail line. This will help to strengthen community connections between west and east Tinwald.

The upgrades will make it safer and easier for people to cross the highway between west and east residential areas and to turn right across the main flow of traffic, especially during peak times.

It will also be easier for people to get from west Tinwald to local shops and businesses, instead of travelling to Ashburton in the car.

A key outcome for all New Zealand Upgrade Programme (NZUP) funded projects, is for people in growing regions and towns to have more travel choices, so it's much easier and safer to walk, bike or scoot to school for example.

We will be working with Ashburton District Council to ensure local road pavement and footpaths in Tinwald are prepared for the expected changes in traffic and that road markings and signs are added or upgraded accordingly.

What's next?

Over the next year, the project team will be undertaking site investigations and working with Ashburton District Council and KiwiRail to develop the detailed design for the project.

We're expecting construction to start in approximately mid-2023 (subject to property and consents), and completion to be around mid-2024.
