This can be a wonderful opportunity to talk with your children about our multicultural society and our diverse local area with many stories available for free on our online platform Story Box Library. If you are interested in one of our craft packs, come into the children’s library during opening hours and ask one of our friendly staff at the desk. Each class will be dedicated to one of the world's cuisines. Set in the Brooklyn of the 1940s, the film elucidates the friendship between two young Jews of differing factions. Danny is Hassidic, while Reuven is a Zionist. Though separated ideologically, the boys find a common bond through their love of stickball. Click here to watch. ![]() HANUKKAH BEAR A bear wakes to wonderful smells that leads him to the house of Bubba Brayna. Bubba Brayna makes the best latkes in the village, but at ninety-seven, she doesn't hear or see well. When the bear arrives at her door, she believes he is her rabbi. Bubba Brayna and the bear light the menorah, play the dreidel game, and eat all the latkes. LOCAL STUDIES ![]() LOCAL HISTORY: THE HAKOAH CLUB An institution in Bondi, the Hakoah Club was originally founded as a soccer and sports club for young Jewish men. The club met in many different venues and locations including the former King's Theatre in Bondi until they settled in a purpose built complex in Hall Street in 1975. At the time of its opening the new premises was described as being 'a magnificent club, one of the finest in the world', and was envisaged as a community, entertainment and leisure hub for the local community. The Hall Street club closed in 2009, and plans are in place to open a new premises in Paddington in 2023. MARK & EVETTE MORAN NIB LITERARY AWARD ![]() NIB AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED Waverley Council is delighted to announce that the winner of the 2021 Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award ($20,000) is Amnesia Road, Landscape, violence and memory, by Luke Stegemann (NewSouth). The winner of the Nib People's Choice Prize ($2,500) is Son of the Brush: A memoir, by Tim Olsen (Allen & Unwin). Catch all the action from Wednesday’s online event, hosted by Walkley-award winning journalist, writer and TV presenter Jan Fran, on demand at waverley.nsw.gov.au/nib. All of this year’s Nib Award finalist works are available to borrow from Waverley Library. The winner will receive $300, and a private session with Rohan to review your work and portfolio. The top 20 photos will be exhibited online at secondnature.org.au.
