Assessors in the wild!

Tim Forcey - My Efficient Electric Home

Tim Forcey is a Scorecard assessor based in Melbourne.

He has written a great resource for homeowners and renters, providing tips and strategies on how to convert their home into an efficient, healthy and comfortable space suitable for our all-electric future. Tim has now sold over 10,000 copies of his book.

The Scorecard team recently got in touch with Tim to understand a little more about why he wrote 'My Efficient Electric Home

Why did you decide to write this book?

Because the publisher from Murdoch Books (a division of Allen and Unwin) asked me to, after hearing me on a Design Files podcast… where I was conversationally describing the suggestions I make to clients during my consults. I had thought, a few years ago, to maybe write a self-published e-book. I was never going to chase some publishing business to try to convince them the book would be a good idea. Anyway, it was easy to say yes when the publisher rang me. Having had chats with clients in over 1,000 homes… I just wrote down the things I’ve said in those homes!

What did you hope to achieve with this book?

As with everything else I have done in this space, address the Climate Emergency… if only in a small way.

What has the response to your book been like for you?

It’s selling well, after what, four months. I guess you could say it’s an Australian best seller. The publisher has gone back for a couple of re-prints already. And why not, lots of folks are interested in saving money, being more comfortable, healthier, and reducing environmental and climate impacts. My proudest moment was seeing it for sale in Big W… because we have to get the messages to everyone. I will have (pro bono) done 50 community-led book events in the six months from publication to the end of 2024, none of which I have organised. I just say yes to whomever rings up...from Lake Macquarie to Port Adelaide so far. Good on all the local community groups taking action, and good on some council sustainability officers, and librarians too! People who have businesses in the home comfort and energy space (e.g. Scorecarders) should feel free to attend these events and hand out business cards if they wish. We need to make it easy for people to take action in their homes.

What are you looking forward to next?

I take it a month at a time… So I’m organising trips to South Australia and New South Wales to complete those final 2024 book events. My wife will do some of this travelling with me.. and it has been great for us even to go out to dinner with and get to better know some of the local community group organisers.

Out and about with Australian Energy Assessments

The team at Australian Energy Assessments (AEA) has been trialling some innovative approaches to engage with potential customers.

Along with attending local council events such as Glen Eira Eco Expo and Electrify Boroondara Expo, they have been seen out and about at community markets and shopping centre pop up stalls.

They have also rolled out bus advertising around Melbourne and bicycle advertising in high foot traffic areas like Bourke Street Mall and South Melbourne Market.
