D-News - Dressage Queensland's Newsletter

May 17, 2022

Editor's report

Welcome to the May edition of D News for 2022. When I wrote the last newsletter, it was not long after the insane flooding of late February and March and here we are in SE Queensland /Northern NSW still deep in mud with the possibility of more flooding rain to come. And now Western and Northern Queensland are suffering form unprecendented May rain.  It certainly adds another dimension to managing our horse health and exercise regimes.

On the subject of horse health (non-mud related), included in this newsletter is an article about using boots or bandages when exercising. I felt it raised some interesting points but personally, have not yet been able to ditch the protection that boots have to offer.

Other articles include: reminders about important rule change dates  (helmet tagging, trimming of sensory hair); performance requirements to compete at each level, the updated 2022 Dressage Calendar and upcoming competitions and closing dates.

There is also information regarding THE date to put aside - The Carl Hester Masterclass at QSEC in November.

Please get in touch if you have any information you would like to see included in the next Newsletter, or have information you would like to include. I would also love to receive some of your photographs that could be included, please send to myself at  admin@rto2go.com  along with a short description about you and your horse.

Stay safe and as dry as possible.

DQ Committee member and AOR Rep.

Chairs report

Oh no, here we go again with another wet. Frustrating, to say the least. I hope all of you stay safe and as dry as is possible in the conditions.

Congratulations to all QLD riders who attended Dressage with the Stars and Sydney CDI. What an outstanding performance from each and every one of you, not the least of which is the commitment to attend these events. Having ‘been there, done that’ prior to kids I know the time, financial and familial sacrifice it takes, and I hope you all had a wonderful time, regardless of where your name ended up in the results sheet. It really is a lot of fun to be away surrounded by like-minded friends, glamping or camping (depending on your accommodation – mine was definitely always camping, unless there’s something below camping? Slum-ping?).

Huge good luck and best wishes to two of our QLD riders heading off overseas to do some training and have a go at WEG Qualifications – Jayden Brown taking a team of horses from Willinga Park (owned by Terry Snow) and Elliott Patterson and the incredible Santiago owned by DQ Owners of the Year Paul and Emma Weel. So very exciting for both of you and we can’t wait to follow your progress.

Congratulations and huge thanks to every event organiser who has so far managed to get an event off the ground. It has been another trying year for event organisers so far, but this time we can blame Mother Nature and not COVID. Maybe one day we’ll finally get a good run at some comps.

On another note, Dressage Queensland are aware that the AAOR recommendations for events are still not working. It’s a source of great frustration for us, as we really want the system to be as fair as possible, and when most of the top six in a class are taking home two prizes for essentially the same thing it really defeats the purpose. Queensland is blessed to have a large population of very competent and capable non-professional riders who meet the National criteria for AOR but are also very capable of winning open classes and championships, even at major National shows. This means the National AOR criteria as it stands doesn’t really work as intended up here – that is, to support and encourage less experienced riders to dip their toes into bigger official competitions and not be competing against the more experienced riders for rosettes. We tried to overcome this by introducing Foundation for the bigger events, which was more like the old Division 2 that worked beautifully in Queensland, and based more on experience than just primary income source (and still acknowledged our very skilled and experienced AORs with an AOR end of year award), but unfortunately some amateur riders that didn’t fit Foundation were disgruntled and gave our event organisers such a hard time they no longer wanted to run either division. In response we have trailed only awarding one rosette per person, and you have to pick whether you wish to contend for the open or AOR rosette (I mean, do you really need two rosettes for exactly the same class?), however we are aware from the first few events this also isn’t playing out as fairly as we hoped. Believe me when I say we are trying really hard to find a solution that works fairly, and any feedback on how YOU think this should work is appreciated. And one that doesn’t involve the top six riders taking home two rosettes for exactly the same thing 😉

Just a reminder that DQ use Facebook as our primary information sharing platform, as well as D-News and we now have an Instagram page. We do not share current news on the website, as its a cumbersome platform that is difficult to navigate and news information quickly drops off the main page. If there is something on the website we need to direct you to we’ll share a link to the relevant page on social media or D News. If you don’t have Facebook maybe consider asking a friend who does to keep an eye on announcements and send them to you, and will also endeavour to cross-post to Instagram so those of you who prefer Instagram can source your information there. I’m sorry if that doesn’t work for some, but DQ are a volunteer committee of very busy people who have businesses, jobs, families, their own horses and run a lot of other events, and we don’t have the time to make sure information is shared across a multitude of different platforms to make sure every single preference is catered for. We are doing the best we can to deliver this sport in as fair and equitable way as possible and without personal agenda. While it may not suit everyone our role is to develop, support, grow and deliver as best we can to all our members.

Happy riding. Well, maybe not this week unless you are lucky enough to have an indoor.

Kindest regards,
Anita Barton

FYI Box - Did you know...?

The National Rules have been ammended with changes coming into effect as of 1 July 2022. The summary of EA Dressage Rule Amendments can be found on the EA website – HERE

A reminder that Equestrian Australia has banned the trimming of sensory hairs effective from 1st July 2022. Sensory hairs are  located around the mouth, nose and eyes. This applies to all National Competitions and aligns with the FEI rule which came into efffect in 2021.

The full set of rules at  January 2022 can again be found on the EA website.

And as alway, a reminder that it is never OK to claim you didn't know or understand a rule, it  is the responsibility of all involved in the sport to be aware of the rules and how they apply to them.

FEI Rules were updated in January 2022 and can be found on the FEI Website.

Eligibility to Compete

Riders should remember to check the requirements to compete at each level as per Rule 4.8.3.2.

FEI competitors are further reminded that to compete at each FEI level (Small Tour, Medium Tour/Intermediate II and Grand Prix) competency scores must be achieved first or an application made to the Equestrian Australia Dressage Committee  for exemption based on prior horse and rider experience.

Refer to the table in the section below for the competency standards at both National and FEI level.

Eligibility of Horses, Ponies and Combinations for each level

Amateur Owner Riders

Just to remind members regarding the 2022 AOR scheme:

  • The AOR scheme is to be run under National Guidelines.
  • Riders are eligible for only one ribbon, this means that they can't be awarded an Open and an Amateur Ribbon in the same class.
  • DQ will provide rosettes for AOR at Star events. At all other events the awarding of rosettes for AOR is to be at the club’s discretion.
  • All official event scores to count towards end of year AOR awards. These awards will not require self-nomination but will be calculated from recorded results.
  • When entering competitions via Nominate, competitors must tick one box – either AOR or Open
  • AOR classes will still be run separately at the State Championships.

The rules for AOR are as Section 4.6.1 of the National Dressage Rules 2022. It is the responsibility of all riders to read the rules and make sure they understand and follow them. It is probably a good idea to get your coach to read them too so you can ensure you are both on the same page. Remember, our dressage world is small and bad feelings can arise if people are aware of riders who choose to fudge the rules.

To reiterate - all scores at all official competitions now count towards end of year awards and squad selection. That is, you do not have to compete at a Star Event or National event for your score to be considered.

And one further pointer regarding AORs competing on ponies: if you enter in a Pony Class make sure to always tick the AOR box on the Nominate entry form. This will ensure your scores in Pony Classes will automatically be counted for the end of year AOR and Pony awards.

Helmet Tagging for Dressage Mandatory from 1 July 2022

Helmet Tagging for all EA Affiliated Dressage events from 1 July 2022. So, if you haven't done so already, get in touch with your local Dressage Club or State Equestrian Branch to find out where you can get your helmet tagged before 1 July 2022.

In addition, when you are going to an event, check the schedule as there may be block times available for helmet tagging.

If you need your helmet tagged and cannot find a date or time, please email your relevant State Equestrian Branch and they will endeavour to put you in touch with a helmet tagger near you.

Remember, ensuring that your helmet is compliant and safe is always the responsibility of the athlete and a compliant helmet is mandatory under the EA General Regulations.

Helmet tagging only indicates that the helmet complies with current EA standards.

More information and a list of State Helmet Tagging contacts can be found on the EA website.

Boots and Bandages - Are we harming our horses as we try to protect them?

An interesting and thought-provoking article about the possible side-effects of using boots and bandages was published recently in Euro Dressage.
