17 October 2025

Kia ora and welcome

Tēnā koe and welcome to the Waikato state highway weekly roadworks update.

This newsletter includes maintenance and renewal roadworks on state highways across the mighty Waikato, from Waiouru to Kāwhia, Coromandel to Huntly - and everywhere in between.

What is a road rebuild ?

Road rehabilitation is a process used to restore roads that have become worn out or damaged. It goes beyond simple repairs and involves rebuilding the road to ensure it remains safe and durable.

Road rehabilitation involves:

• Removing the old road surface and damaged layers underneath.
• Strengthening the base if the ground is weak or unstable.
• Laying new materials such as asphalt or chipseal to create a smooth driving surface.
• Upgrading drainage systems to prevent future water damage.
• Adding safety improvements like clearer road markings, signage, or barriers.

Road rehabilitation is important because it improves safety for all road users, reduces the need for ongoing maintenance and patch repairs, and supports key industries like freight and tourism by keeping transport routes reliable. It also ensures roads can withstand heavy traffic and changing weather conditions over time.

Thames - Coromandel

Work starting soon

State Highway 25 and State Highway 25A, road works and potential impacts to journeys.

SH25 Thames Coast - closure: The deck replacement on Boundary Creek Bridge, between Te Mata and Waikawau, will see the road closed for 7 days from 5am Wednesday 29 October. Work to strengthen and repair the bridge supports is expected to take 10 weeks to complete. The road will remain open to traffic during this time, except for the 7-day closure at the bridge. Traffic lights and a temporary speed limit are in place while the work is carried out. While SH25 is temporarily closed, access will be maintained to all businesses and properties along SH25 up to the bridge from north and south, but there will be no through traffic. The detour is via SH25A to Hikuai and continue north via Tairua and Whitianga. For those heading south from Coromandel Town, reverse the route. More information.

SH25A Kōpū Hikuai Road - closure: Daytime closures are needed on SH25A for 2 weeks in November for a major road rebuild. The work will take place from Monday 10 until approximately Friday 21 November, with the highway closed between 8am to 5pm Monday-Saturday. The closure points are SH26/SH25A at Kōpū and SH25/SH25A at Hikuai. All traffic through the closure points by 8am will get through before the daily closure. The road will reopen under single lane and stop/go each evening from 5pm and on Sunday 16 November. Delays can be expected. Critical services such as first responders and school buses will be escorted through the site during the day. All other vehicles will be required to take the SH25/SH2/SH26 detour which adds an hour to the travel time. More information.

SH25 Whangamatā: Repairs to a bridge on the outskirts of Whangamatā will see a detour in place for 5-6 weeks from late October. Urgent deck work is needed on the Moana Anu Anu Bridge (also known as the Wentworth Bridge) on SH25. The bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, from Wednesday 29 October to Tuesday 9 December. The closure runs 24/7. The detour through Whangamatā will use Mayfair Avenue and Martyn Road, due to council watermain works on the usual detour route via Port Road and Hetherington Road. The detour adds a few minutes to normal journey times.

Work underway

SH25A Hikuai: Work to replace a culvert on SH25A is underway until early November. The road is reduced to a single lane with stop/go traffic management and a temporary speed restriction in place.

SH25 Kūaotunu: Underslip repairs are underway and the state highway on Kūaotunu Hill is reduced to a single lane.
