Click here Cotton Matters The cotton gin near Katherine in the Northern Territory began processing its first bales last week with expectations the last of the 2023 crop should be processed by the end of June. Tipperary Station’s David Connolly said the Gin was operating well and has the potential to process 1000 bales of cotton a day, as it begins to work through the 2023 modules stored on the Gin site, north of Katherine. Latest NewsIn what is believed to be a world first for a cotton producing country, Cotton Australia has launched a data dashboard to transparently report Australian cotton information across a range of metrics including production, yield, quality, and social and environmental sustainability. The 2024 federal budget includes initiatives relevant to cotton growers and regional communities, including support for emission reduction in agriculture, drought support, vocational education and training, regional infrastructure upgrades, and support for small businesses and agricultural exporters. After attending the Camp Cotton event in Narrabri, Natalie Ernst, Senior Manager of Farm Sustainability Standards at Better Cotton, embarked on a trip to visit cotton farms in the Northern Territory and Western Australia to gain insight into the emerging cotton industry in northern Australia. This week, Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay and Chair Nigel Burnett met with Indian agricultural counsellors Kirin Karamil and Dr. Richard Niall. These counsellors are assisting the Australian cotton industry with Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, aiming to secure a larger tariff-free quota for Australian growers. The inaugural Women in Cotton (Wincott) events in Northern Australia were a success, with over 40 participants joining field walks in Kununurra and Katherine. Hosted by Baldy Bay Farm and Dry River Station, attendees gained insights from guest speakers including Better Cotton's Senior Manager of Farm Sustainability Standards, Natalie Ernst and LDC's Strategic Account Manager, Holly Gall. Cotton Australia and Plant Health Australia are calling for expressions of interest to attend the Cotton Guardians Workshop to be held in Brisbane from 11-12 July. There's been a surge of activity in education as Cotton Australia staff have been busy hosting hands-on learning experiences across cotton-growing regions and Sydney. The regional events, featuring visits to cotton farms and gins, offer valuable insights into the Australian Cotton industry for both educators and students, sparking interest in cotton careers.
