Penn Violence Prevention Consent CirclesDuring New Student Orientation, Penn Violence Prevention offers Consent Circles, an annual consent education program for all incoming students. These hour-long sessions are facilitated by peer educators who are trained to host conversations on consent and interpersonal violence (IPV) with their fellow students. In addition to equipping incoming students to discuss and practice consent, Consent Circles also inform students of the resources available at Penn where students who have been impacted by interpersonal and/or sexual violence can access support. All first-year students will have the opportunity to explore topics related to consent and interpersonal violence in a supportive and approachable environment with their peers. Consent Circles fulfills the Department of Education’s requirement that all incoming first-year students receive consent education and therefore, participation in Consent Circles is mandatory. All Consent Circles for first-year undergraduate students will be held throughout the day on Friday, August 21. That said, Penn Violence Prevention and New Student Orientation recognize that conversations about interpersonal violence can be intense, particularly for survivors of trauma. Those who anticipate feeling triggered by discussing interpersonal violence with their peers based on their past experiences can opt out of the workshop and instead fulfill this requirement by other means. If you need to opt out for the reasons above, please email Penn Violence Prevention at PVP@vpul.upenn.edu. Anything shared with Penn Violence Prevention will be kept in confidence, as all PVP staff are not obligated to report disclosures of interpersonal violence to the Title IX office. Additionally, Penn Violence Prevention staff members will be available on campus during Consent Circles to provide confidential support during and after the training to anyone who may need it.
Penn Parents & Families OrientationDuring New Student Orientation (NSO), Penn has a series of non-mandatory events for Penn parents and families. These programs are offered concurrently to move-in activities and allow families to adjust to campus at their own pace. Visit the Penn Parents & Families Orientation page to learn more about the optional events for Penn parents and families. Please note any NSO events after Tuesday, August 18 is for first-year undergraduate students only, including Convocation.
