Marlborough Roads Recovery Update

The Kenepuru community is invited to attend our upcoming community drop-in session on Thursday 20 February at Portage Resort from 2pm to 4pm.

The drop-in session will give members of the community the opportunity to speak to the Marlborough Roads Recovery team about the next phase of the Kenepuru road recovery works as a result of the significant weather events in 2021 and 2022.

Daytime construction closures will continue next week on Kenepuru Road from Onahau Road for 1.7km. Please note this does not change the access status of the road. Kenepuru Road will remain open around the planned construction closures. Please see the road closures section for more details.

The road retreat at Elephant Point on Moetapu Bay Road is now complete, work continues on drainage upgrades and culvert installation.

In the French Pass area, the box culvert site on Ronga Road is complete with sealing scheduled for next week. Minor works continue on Tennyson Inlet Road and Croisilles Road.

Work on Queen Charlotte Drive continues with new sites established on Moenui Road and Mahakipawa Hill. Please plan ahead for minor delays. 

When travelling near or past our work sites, please ensure you keep outside any fences or barriers for your safety. Adhere to, and do not move any traffic or safety management in place (i.e. cones/signs/traffic lights).

Road closures

 
 

Kenepuru Road - Water Tank slip

The closures on Kenepuru Road from the Onahau Road intersection for 1.7km are in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 5pm Monday to Thursday. On Fridays the closure will be in place from 8am to 12pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm, with the following exceptions; 

  • Thursday 20 February - the closure will only be in place between 8am and 12pm to accomodate the community meeting.

The planned closures will end once sealing is completed. Sealing is scheduled for the end of February (weather dependant).

Please note this does not change the access status of the road. Kenepuru Road will remain open around the planned construction closures. To view the closure location, please visit the CDEM map

Outside of the closure days and times, works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management with up to 10 minute delays. If you have any concerns, please contact recovery@marlboroughroads.com

 

 

Current Kenepuru Road restrictions

 
 

Kenepuru Road is open to the public, with overweight and overlength vehicle restrictions in place. 

Reduced speed limit signage and temporary traffic lights are in place at Portage Heights, the 'water tank slip' site and approximately 500m beyond Nikau Cove (when travelling from Portage). All three sites have a 30km temporary speed limit in place. Please expect minor delays and follow all traffic management signage.

Vehicle restrictions remain on Kenepuru Road from Linkwater to the Heads as follows:

Vehicle Restrictions

Vehicles up to 12.6m in length, and 6 tonne in weight can travel on Kenepuru Road and side roads.

To apply for a permit for an over dimension vehicle to travel on Kenepuru Road, email recovery@marlboroughroads.com or call 0800 213 213. 

There are the following hazards on this section of Kenepuru Road and its side roads including Moetapu Bay Road:

  • Slips
  • Drop outs
  • Single lane in places
  • Increased hazard during rain
  • Uneven surfaces and gravel sections

Other recovery roads

Please be aware that on all roads, works may be in progess and/or traffic management in place. Please expect delays and follow all signage and traffic management.

Heavy rain may lead to roads being closed at short notice. Regardless of the status of the road, please drive to the conditions.

French Pass

 
 

Construction at Ronga Road, 10km from the start of the road is complete. The crew are preparing the road for sealing, scheduled for early next week (weather permitting). 

Minor work on Croisilles Road continues this week with a culvert replacement 1km before the Okiwi Bay intersection.

This week minor works on Tennyson Inlet continue, with the installation of a gabion basket support wall 3km before the Duncan Bay intersection. 

These works will be carried out under stop/go traffic management, please plan ahead for minor delays.

 

 

Kenepuru Road

Daytime construction closures from the Onahau Road intersection for 1.7km towards Portage on Kenepuru Road continue at the 'water tank slip' site. This week concreting of the new kerb and channel was completed ahead of road preparations for sealing. Drainage works are being completed with culvert outlet works underway. 

Sealing at 'water tank slip' is scheduled for the end of February (weather dependant). The planned closures will end once sealing is completed. Please see the road closure section for a full schedule of closures.

Please note we are currently undertaking unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveying of Kenepuru Road and surrounding areas. The UAV surveys topographical features of the road and surrounding slopes/slips to inform designs.

Moetapu Bay

 
 

The road retreat at Elephant Point, on Moetapu Bay Road is now complete. Road sealing at this site is scheduled for late-February following the completion of culvert upgrades along the road. 

Work to install the remaining culverts will be completed under stop/go traffic management. Please plan ahead for minor delays.

Queen Charlotte Drive

 
 

Drainage improvements on Tepuia Heights are now complete with the upgrade of a final culvert near the start of the road this week. 

As part of programmed maintenance, road resurfacing will be undertaken on Queen Charlotte Drive at various locations outside of Linkwater, Ngakuta Bay and Momorangi over the coming weeks.

Drainage improvements on Moenui Road are underway. The crew are currently working on excavation for the new concrete channel along the side of the road. This work is expected to be completed by the end of February. 

This week work to clear the overslip on Mahakipawa Hill, 1km from Havelock on Queen Charlotte Drive began. The road will be open to one lane while construction is in place. 

Please follow all traffic management when you're travelling through our worksites to ensure the safety of crews and road users. Temporary speed restrictions and traffic management will be in place. Please plan ahead and allow for minor delays of up to 10 minutes at each site.

Work is now complete on the rock revetment at Dalton's Bridge. This week crews began landscaping to reform the shoulder road access to the river, before disestablishing from site. Please expect increased truck movements in the area while this work is underway.

Waihopai Valley

 
 

A new bridge spanning the Waihopai River, replacing one swept away in the July 2021 storm is now complete. 

Earlier this week members of the local community celebrated with Mayor Nadine Taylor, Councillors, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi representatives, Marlborough Roads staff and contractors at the new bridge to mark the occasion.

The new single lane structure is 110m long, 4.1m wide between guardrails and has seven 16m spans which tower nine metres above the river. You can read the Marlborough District Council media release here.

Next week abutment protection works will begin at Craiglochart Bridge. This work will take place off the road however please expect an increase in truck movements while construction is in place. Scheduled works may impact river access for those using the swimming hole. 

Work will also commence along Waihopai Valley Road, 2km before the Power Station, to clear an overslip and to complete minor drainage works.
