It’s that time of the year again. Our team is busy getting our plans for the new financial year in order. You would think that it would get easier every time you go through this process. The reality is every year brings its own unique challenges. This year our team is working to help Te Arawhiti and other agencies launch our first Matariki public holiday.  While it is a distraction from business as usual it’s also an incredibly important kaupapa for Aotearoa. We are honoured to be able to contribute to the cause.

In terms of our core business, our focus is to ensure as much stability as possible. With the outcomes of the Māori Media Sector Shift due to appear soon, it is important that we create the space for our constituency to contemplate the changes that will come in an orderly manner. It is important that we provide the time for our content creators to wānanga what is possible and set an ambitious course.

Ka mutu, mā tātou te ara ki reira e waihanga. Tū whitia te hopo!

Larry Parr,
Kaihautū o Te Māngai Pāho

Waiata Hou

Louis Baker - Kapakapa

Kapakapa is an exquisite union of Te Reo Māori and English language vocals, modern hip-hop/beats production and vintage synthesiser soul.

“Louis conjured the innovative idea to alternate from Māori to English, and for the lines not to be literal translations but a continuous story,” he explains. “This bilingual style makes Te Reo more accessible, but at the same time challenges listeners to learn the meaning behind the words, buried beneath the sauce.” says Te Kuru Dewes.

Rākai Whauwhau - Aroha

Rākai Whauwhau released his debut single Aroha which he composed to express the love he has for his two daughters and also his family and māoritanga.

He says Aroha “expresses my love for my whānau, my elders, being Māori, tikanga Māori, uplifting Māori.”

Rei - Anahera

In this first te reo Māori release of 2022, Anahera is an up-beat reggaeton production with pop vibes and catchy hooks, it's hard not to like this tune!

In Anahera, Rei sings and raps about a lover who has restored his faith in love. Anahera means 'angel' and this metaphor is referenced throughout his kupu.

Current funding rounds

Māori Wardens documentary
Te Māngai Pāho seeks requests for proposals to produce a documentary that highlights the rich history of the Māori Wardens here in Aotearoa.

The hope is that this work will tell the unique history of the Māori Warden movement from its inception in the early 1900s through to the present day. Exploring how the unique role and capacity of its members has evolved over the years and revealing the aspirations of today’s members as they seek greater control of their own destiny as an important cohort of individuals committed to serving communities across Aotearoa. It is expected that the project will include a significant documentary that will appeal to a wide audience, but innovative content creators may propose additional or ancillary content assets to maximise the audience appeal of the content.
