Pohokura Stream Bridge project now complete

Last week more than 200 native plants were planted along the banks of the Pohokura Stream, completing the project to replace a damaged culvert with a new two laned bridge.

As well as being aesthetically pleasing once they've grown, the plants will play an important role in protecting the awa by helping to stabilise the banks and reduce run off from the road.

Preserving the natural environment was always a key consideration when planning this project so to help reduce the impact on flora and fauna and the waterway, the project was undertaken in a unique way.

To help manage the amount of soil and debris ending up in the stream, we built the bridge structure first before carefully removing the damaged culvert from underneath it. This approach provided not only an environmental benefit but also meant that traffic could continue to use the bridge while the culvert was removed.

The bridge structure was completed earlier in the year, reinstating the road to two lanes.

Many thanks to the construction team who put in 6000 hours to complete this project, motorists for their patience and abiding by the traffic management and Ngāti Maru Iwi for providing advice and cultural monitoring services.

Winter works on the highway

The summer construction season may be over, but we'll still be doing a lot of work on the highway over the winter.

In the coming weeks crews will be out felling trees on the roadside to improve safety. The trees, none of which are natives, are being removed to improve sight lines and reduce the risk to motorists if they run off the road.

New road markings and signage to improve safety will also be installed over the winter months.

Signs will also be installed near the entrance to the Moki Tunnel advising motorists to watch for cyclists, and work to replace a damaged culvert at Manawawiri, near Stratford, with a new two–lane bridge will also get underway towards the end of the month.

We are continuing to work through designs and consents for sealing the gorge.
