As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to celebrate the power of volunteerism and share my appreciation for all that ABVP’s volunteers do to support excellence in veterinary medicine.
Volunteerism makes extraordinary things possible – strengthening our communities, elevating our profession, and connecting us with something larger than ourselves. It’s paying forward what we ourselves have received from those who came before us. It’s part of who we are and a testament to the power of what we can accomplish when we’re working together. And it’s a tremendous opportunity to build deeper relationships and a sense of community with your fellow Diplomates.
This year, I am especially grateful for the passion, expertise, and commitment of our Diplomates. You have stepped forward—sometimes in small ways, sometimes in remarkable ones—to support our shared mission. Whether you’ve given your time to a committee, mentored a colleague, or contributed expertise to a specific project, your service makes a profound difference.
Your volunteerism is crucial to continued success of ABVP – quite literally we can’t do this without you! This is particularly true this time of year, as we gear up for credentials. We are always looking for additional reviewers, especially in some of our smaller RVSs, so please reach out if you’re able to help. Exam, MOC, Outreach and more… whatever your interest and availability, we can connect you with a meaningful volunteer role!
Thank you for offering your time, your passion, and your expertise in support of your colleagues and future fellow Diplomates. It is seen and appreciated.
Wishing you a warm and joyful Thanksgiving.
With gratitude,
Stephanie
Sonnya Dennis, DVM, DABVP (Canine & Feline Practice), MOC Chair

This November we celebrate the culture, heritage, contributions, sacrifices, and legacy of American Indian and Alaska Native people. It wasn’t until 2009 that Congress passed and President Obama signed legislation to commemorate every Friday after Thanksgiving, Native American Heritage Day. The first proclamation for designating November as Native American Heritage Month was signed in 1990. Despite an often overlooked tragic and mournful past, Native Americans have persisted, and play an essential role in how the US came to be. As much as 3/5 of the world’s agricultural crops originated in the Americas - we have early Indigenous communities to thank for corn, beans, squash,
potatoes, tomatoes, chili peppers, and cacao. We owe the invention of syringes, topical anesthetic, snow goggles, mouthwash, sunscreen, and much more to Native peoples. Native American government influenced the US constitution, and many do not realize that the bald eagle on the US shield is an Iroquois symbol. During the month of November, and everyday, let us recognize the vibrant Native culture embedded in our society and uplift Native American voices to move towards a better future. Start now! Educate yourself and read works by Native authors. Support Native Artists on an online marketplace. Acknowledge Native voices in vet med by following Natives in VetMed on social media and visiting their website.

The Residency Committee Needs You! We need your help to support future Diplomates! The primary responsibility of the committee is to evaluate resident progress by reviewing their training logs, which are submitted every six months. It’s a great way to support future diplomates and your colleagues who are training them! Committee members will also help review applications for new residency programs. We can use help in every RVS, but really need more support for Avian, Beef, Dairy, and ECM. The more committee members, the lighter the workload for everyone! If you’re interested in volunteering for the Residency Committee or have questions, please reach out to
me directly.
