As Tim is the current chair of the Executive Management Team he gets the last say in 2021… Well, 2021 is all but finished, and with it my 40th year as an accountant at 139 Moray Place. It has been very different to that first year, not least because of Covid. But the fundamentals are still the same, it is a great place to work. That’s thanks to the team here and all the clients I have come to know and work with. In deference to my 40 years, I have been granted a few extra weeks leave over February and March, for which I have great and exciting plans (Covid permitting). Most important of which, is time that Kristen and I will have with our family. This will be followed by fishing, watching cricket, some epicurean experiences, and perhaps some more fishing… But before I can pull stumps for 2021 there are few wee jobs to tick off the list, not the least of which is to wish you and yours, from all the Partners and Team at Polson Higgs, a very Merry Christmas and the most brilliant of 2022. Merry Christmas and see you in 2022. Tim In this newsletter we are going to cover:
Stephen Higgs Appointed University of Otago Chancellor
Photo Credit: University of Otago Stephen Higgs began his illustrious career with Anderson and Co (now Polson Higgs) back in 1975, when as Dux of Kaikorai Valley College, intending to start a B.Com at the University the next year, he was recruited as an intern and for a holiday job (initially including tasks such as photocopying and running partners’ errands!). After graduating from the University of Otago in 1979, he became a full-time employee and within 10 years became a partner. Stephen has been a lecturer at the University, appointed to the University Council in 2012, and is a board member for a range of different companies and organisations. He is a Chartered Fellow for the Institute of Directors, Chairman of Otago Innovation Limited as well as the University of Otago Foundation Trust. An impressive resume for anyone, but to us he is a spot of wisdom and an encouraging word. Xero tips & tricks Our xero expert and newly promoted Manager, Courtney Adams will be delivering her last tips and tricks session for 2021 on Wednesday. During this session, Courtney will guide us through how to most effectively use payroll in xero. If you have missed any of the previous sessions, or would like to re-watch a particular session you can find them all on our facebook home page.
Surfing for Farmers For three evenings this summer, we will be ditching our computers and hitting the surf in support of our farmers. Surfing for Farmers is an initiative that encourages farmers to surf to help manage stress and improve mental health. Since its initiation in December 2018, 4,159 farmers have zipped up a wetsuit and it is now run at 18 locations across New Zealand. As a local sponsor, you will find us down at Ocean View beach on the following three Thursdays:
This is a free event for famers and their families are also welcome. Surfboards, wetsuits and a surf instructor will be provided, and a BBQ with exceptional yarns will follow each session. To register, follow the link below or phone Becs Cameron on 027 366 9275 Movember The Polson Higgs team had another successful year raising money for Movember in support of men's health. We grew 8 moustaches, moved a whopping 341 kms and raised a total of $3,117! A huge thank you goes out to everyone that participated in the challenge and to all those that donated … supporting our fathers, partners, brothers and friends. Club Cash Boost Congratulations to the Columba College Rowing Club who were the November recipients of our $1,000 Club Cash Boost. Whilst Columba College students have been rowing for 35 years, the club itself was established in 2012. For many years, students have achieved success at the highest levels including the Otago and Canterbury Championships, South Island Secondary School Championships, and the Maadi Cup. Individuals have been selected to represent the South Island Under 18s, Otago Provincial team, NZ Juniors, and NZ Elite Team. We are thrilled to be able to assist the Columba College rowing club as they develop and grow their rowing programme, one seat at a time, by helping them into a new boat! Polson Higgs Social Club December Charity Carrying on with the theme of this months newsletter, we would like to congratulate one of our managers, David Hogue (pictured), who won his first ever Polson Higgs raffle after 10 years of trying. Each month, our social club gathers donations from the team for a chosen charity. For December, the Social Club did something a little different and raffled off a fabulous hamper that was kindly donated by Countdown. From the raffle we raised $850 and our very generous Partners matched that, taking our total to $1,700. This will be donated to Presbyterian Support Otago. Christmas Hours The Polson Higgs office will be closed from 12:00pm on 23 December and will reopen at 8:00am on 10 January 2022 If you require urgent assistance during this time, please contact Steve Dunbar on 027 220 2501.
