Click here Cotton Matters The Australian Cotton Industry will gather on the Gold Coast from 6-8 August 2024 to network, learn and unite around the theme “Cultivating Excellence.” According to Conference Chair Liz Stott, the challenge is to create a program that appeals to these diverse groups, ensures the farmer voice is heard and is inclusive. “In 2022 we had a record number of over 2400+ attendees at Conference, and they came to learn from over 120 expert speakers on a wide range of topics from weeds and diseases to the drivers of our global market,” Liz said. “The committee is currently considering topics including cover cropping, renewables, carbon farming, climate forecasting, water efficiency, the performance of new cotton varieties, mental fitness and artificial intelligence applications for cotton. Latest NewsThere are not many opportunities to get the positive story of cotton in Australia to hundreds of thousands of people at one event – that’s what the Royal Easter Show provides for the cotton industry. The Show this year attracted close to 800,000 people – mostly from the city – and all were given an opportunity to feel cotton, most for the first time, and to hear about the great work our growers do. Cotton Australia has appointed a new Regional Manager to liaise with growers in the Dawson Valley. Renee Surawski has a comprehensive background in agribusiness and applied science, coupled with extensive experience in the agriculture industry and project coordination. Applications are closing soon for the Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program which supports women in agriculture to elevate their leadership through mentorship, networking, and industry partnerships. Cotton Australia’s Senior Manager for Northern Australia Simone Cameron, a huge fan of the program, graduated from the program two years ago and acted as MC for the graduation event last year. The Bayer Macintyre Vallery Field Day headed to ‘Cleveland’ Doolin Agriculture North Star this year with a bus full of keen participants enjoying a host of activities. One of the key events saw a focus on irrigation with an overhead irrigation management panel followed by a CSD and Bayer crop update. The third annual Charity Golf Day for the Southern Valleys Cotton Growers Association has raised thousands of dollars for charity. In total, 144 golfers, most of them growers attended the event at the Griffith Golf Club which featured nearest to the pin and longest drive among other features. The 2024 Cotton Award nominations have had a positive response with applications across the categories including Bayer Grower of the Year and AgriRisk High Achiever of the year. Nominations have been extended for the Cotton Seed Distributors Researcher of the Year with organisers reminding applicants that this year extension representatives are also welcome to apply. Students studying Agricultural Science at the University of Sydney found this out while helping out on the Cotton Australia stand at the Sydney Show. The student volunteers not only learnt about growing cotton in Australia, but they also got the chance to network with growers, industry members and educators. |
