Click here The FASSNewsletterMAY 5th, 2022 Video: Play for Ukraine Concert Photo credit: Curtis Perry Last week, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences partnered with Ottawa Chamberfest and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Ottawa Branch, to present a concert in support of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. The renowned Gryphon Trio joined Chamberfest Artistic Director and violinist Carissa Klopoushak and others in a program celebrating Ukrainian music and culture, featuring Ukrainian chamber music, choral music, folk singing, and poetry. Volunteers from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress accepted donations onsite, collecting over $55,000 in audience donations for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Introducing: The Gunn Prize The Department of History at Carleton University, the Canadian Immigration Historical Society (CIHS), and the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN) are excited to announce a new partnership to support student research. The Gunn Prize, valued at $1,000, will recognize excellence in a research paper which addresses the crucial topic of migration to and settlement in Canada from a historical perspective. Graduating fourth-year students and graduate students enrolled in any social sciences or humanities discipline at any Canadian university are eligible to apply. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2022. FASS discussed this opportunity with Drs. Laura Madokoro and James Miller (History) and FPA's Dr. James Milner (Political Science) to learn more about this opportunity. 2022 Scholars for QES Advanced Scholars West Africa Program As one of eleven Canadian universities to receive funding from the Queen Elizabeth Scholars (QES) Advanced Scholars West Africa program to work together to find solutions to the world’s increasingly complex challenges, Carleton University is thrilled to announce its Scholars for 2022. The project is led by Dr. Nduka Otiono (Institute of African Studies) in collaboration with colleagues at Carleton who constitute a Governing Committee, and various African partners including Aisha Fofana Ibrahim, assistant deputy vice-chancellor of Fourah Bay College at the University of Sierra Leone. Carleton’s Heloise Emdon serves as Manager International, while Stephanie Pineau has been the Project Coordinator. Thank You FASS Administrative Staff! This year, April 27th marked Administrative Professionals' Day – but appreciation for the fantastic administrative staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is an everyday event! Drawing from community submissions to our recent Kindness Campaign, we spoke to a few of the many exceptional people who ensure that FASS is running smoothly throughout the fall, winter and summer terms. Undergraduate Summer Research Interns We are pleased to introduce the 2022 cohort of Undergraduate Summer Research Interns! The Undergraduate Summer Research Internship program provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to conduct independent research during the summer months, under the supervision of a FASS faculty member. Learning With Our Hands: Tour the Book Arts Lab When: May 5 at 6:00 PM EST on Zoom The MacOdrum Library’s Book Arts Lab invites you to a virtual tour of the Lab and to hear from Master Printer Larry Thompson, from faculty members Drs. Robin Norris and Jody Mason (Department of English Language and Literature), and from several of the students who completed work in the Lab this semester. Drop in to this virtual event to learn more about their teaching and learning adventures in the Lab. Noons for Now Hosted by the Carleton Climate Commons, Noons for Now is a weekly teach-in to discuss climate change related issues. Upcoming teach-ins are scheduled online from 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST and include: • May 5: Local Action at the Experimental Farm with Susan Ross (Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism), Joel Harden (MPP for Ottawa Centre), and Diane McIntyre (Re-Imagine Ottawa) Everyone is welcome! Communal Conversations: Symposium on the Future of Knowledge-Making When: May 6-7 on Zoom The Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies will be hosting Communal Conversations: A Roundtable Symposium on the Future of Knowledge-Making. This two-day event seeks to examine what it would look like to move beyond institutionalized (academic, religious, governmental, medical, etc.) methods of inquiry and knowledge-making. Launch: Ideas Carleton University’s Innovation Hub is pleased to share their new experiential learning opportunity, Launch: Ideas, a hands-on and developmental program offered to provide students with opportunities to build real-time solutions for local organizations or small businesses. When you sign up for Launch: Ideas, you’ll work in a team of 4-7 like-minded students to solve a major problem or produce a solution for a real company. Students from all corners of campus are invited to submit a Launch: Ideas application form. The deadline to apply for the Fall 2022 term is May 6, 2022. Small Modernisms When: May 12-13 at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre Dr. Michael Windover (Art and Architectural History) and Dr. Dustin Valen (McGill University) are pleased to host “Small Modernisms,” a two-day symposium dedicated to exploring the role of the built environment in shaping Canadian society in the decades following the Second World War. The event is free, however space is limited and registration is required. Carleton students interested in attending and producing reflections on the activities and research presented at the symposium may receive financial compensation from the organizers. Evil, Suffering, and the Global Pandemic in Contemporary Islamic Philosophy When: June 28-30 on Zoom The Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam and the University of Cincinnati invite you to From the Divine to the Human: New Perspectives on Evil, Suffering, and the Global Pandemic. This three-day conference seeks to reinvigorate the study of the global philosophy of religion by utilizing the rich and unique resources of the Islamic intellectual tradition as well as contemporary Muslim philosophers’ creative engagements with these materials.
