Bridging communities

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is replacing the Old Māngere Bridge with a new and improved bridge that will reflect what made the existing bridge a much-loved and long-standing community asset, while creating an iconic new landmark for the area.

The replacement bridge will be an important connection between the communities of Onehunga and Māngere Bridge, as well as an appealing public and recreational space for visitors. After gathering valuable and extensive feedback from communities, and working with Mana Whenua, we’ve developed the design of the new bridge to reflect shared heritage and cultural values of the area.

Ready to ride

In early December, the Onehunga Primary School bike club stopped for a quick visit at the Old Māngere Bridge site office.

Our site office was located on their cycling route around the harbour shoreline and provided a great opportunity for a local school to find out more about the project and how the bridge will be built.

Removing the Old Māngere Bridge from the harbour

The first stage of the project is the controlled demolition of the Old Māngere Bridge. This stage will begin in early 2020.

Work to remove the Old Māngere Bridge will be carried out from both sides of the harbour using cranes and the middle section will be taken down by an excavator mounted on a barge.

Changes to the northern and southern side of the harbour have been made to allow work to be safely carried out. Click here to read more about how this may affect you.

A key focus for the project is ensuring potential environmental effects are minimised and access to the boat ramp is maintained while keeping members of the community and workers safe.

The timeline below outlines the project milestones.
