Te Ara Tūtohu: Waitara to Bell Block

9 September 2022

Princess Street intersection

Kia ora,

Together with our project partners Manukorihi, Ngāti Rahiri, Otaraua, Pukerangiora, Puketapu Hapū and Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa and New Plymouth District Council, we are inviting you to learn more about safety improvements planned for SH3 between Waitara and Bell Block at a drop-in session this month.

We’ve nearly completed stormwater works along State Highway 3 and are on track to begin construction of the first of four roundabouts planned for the route this summer. The first roundabout at Princess Street and the underpass will be a key focus at the sessions.

People will also have the opportunity discuss the restoration of Tangaroa Stream as part of the Waitara Stormwater Programme with the New Plymouth District Council at the Waitara and Puke Ariki events.

Sealing the Princess Street intersection and removal of the detour

Stormwater works are progressing well and now the weather is warming up we can seal the road at the Princess Street intersection and remove the detour for light vehicles through Waitara. We are aiming to seal the road on 19 September.  This date is highly weather dependant as we need four fine days either side of sealing. The detour through Waitara for light vehicles will be removed shortly after the sealing is done and all traffic will use SH3 under stop/go traffic lights from approx. 200 metres north of Mamaku Road to  approx. 400 south of Princess Street. Delays are expected to be no more than 5 minutes.
