Making SH22 between Drury and Paerata safer
Thanks to everyone who came along to our open days in August last year – we had some great conversations about how we can make your stretch of road safer.
What you told us
Around 300 people attended the three events and close to 70 feedback forms were completed. The feedback showed there’s support for the safety improvements we’ve planned for your road, particularly the intersection improvements and the extra lanes.
It also showed us that people are worried about how some safety improvements might affect the way you use the road and that they could slow down traffic.
We listened to what you said
We’ve listened to what you’ve told us and will be using your feedback to decide on next steps. You can take a look at a summary of the feedback we have received here.
How we’re making SH22 safer
We’re looking at making these improvements:
-
Putting in a wide centreline with a traffic island and possibly an extra lane each way between Drury and Great South Road.
-
Making the Great South, Burberry, Jesmond, Oira, Blackbridge and Glenbrook Road intersections safer by putting in a roundabout or traffic lights, right turn bays or safer turning areas.
-
Making the Whangapouri and Bycroft intersections safer by putting in right turn bays or safer turning areas.
-
Remove unsafe passing lane.
-
Making the stretch between Glenbrook and Paerata safer by putting in a flexible barrier in the middle of the road in some areas to reduce the risk of head-on crashes, as well as a wide centreline and a painted area in the middle of the road for turning vehicles.
-
Putting in flexible median and side safety barriers to stop drivers running off the road and to keep vehicles separated between Drury and Paerata.
-
Creating a two-metre wide road shoulder so there’s more space for people walking or cycling.
