Two more sites finished in SH4 resilience work

Another significant milestone was reached this month, as work on two more State Highway 4 resilience sites was completed. This means we’ve now finished work on over half of the resilience locations on this stretch of road.

Over the past 2 years, we’ve been improving the resilience of SH4 between Whanganui and Raetihi with a focus on seven main sites. With the completion of work on Hapokopoko Curve Rock and South Raupiu Retreat in March, we’ve now finished work on four, with work on the remaining three well underway.

There have been some major challenges to this work – including delays due to adverse weather conditions and ground instability. So it’s pleasing to have wrapped up work here, having drastically improved the long-term resilience of each site.

With work completed on Otoko Pā overslip (May 2020), Whiskey Corner (June 2020), and now Hapokopoko Curve Rock and South Raupiu Retreat, that leaves three remaining locations to complete.

Te Oreore, the site of the major slip in October 2019 had a temporary road installed in December 2019. Work on a permanent road is underway as we continue to dewater and monitor this site.

Just south of Te Oreore is the Auraki Stream Road Retreat. We’re hoping to start construction on this site later this year following the consent process.

And earlier this month, construction started on the North of Kukuta Road site near Upokongaro. Work here is expected to be completed later this year.
