Decades in the planning, six years in the building - the final section of the Waikato Expressway is opening to traffic this week.
The 22km Hamilton section – taking SH1 east of the city – will open this week following a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday and minor finishing works. There is still some work to complete the Resolution Drive Extension which is where all efforts are now focused.
Meanwhile our final Project Update is out, with a recap of the project and the graphic everyone needs to help find their way to and from the interchanges.
On the back page is a look at our partnership with iwi before and during the project which has led to a cultural reserve at Tamahere, artworks, bridge abutment designs and storyboards telling the history of the area where the road now passes
You can explore the project by walking or cycling on the new shared paths – especially at Tamahere to view the reserve (off Alfred Main Drive) and at Resolution Interchange (take the path along Resolution Drive extension) where the cultural symbolism in the artwork, storyboards, paths and planting stands out. Just not until the road opens in a few days.
That’s it from us – who hope you enjoy the expressway and all the benefits it brings.
