Open Day Postponed

The State Highway 2 Waihī to Tauranga Corridor Open Day planned for Wednesday 17 February in Katikati is regrettably postponed, due to the Bay of Plenty region entering COVID-19 Alert Level 2.

Under COVID-19 Alert Level 2, gatherings are restricted to 100 people or less. Our project partners and crew make up a large proportion of this number, which means fewer community members would be permitted into the event at any one time.

To keep our staff, partners, stakeholders and the community safe, we will continue to monitor the Alert Level and announce a rescheduled date for the open day as soon as we’re able.

SH2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements update

Four of the 10 project sections are now complete along the SH2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements project corridor.

These are section one (Heath Road to Trig Road), sections two and three (Trig Road to Athenree Gorge combined) and section seven (Wharawhara Road to Sharp Road).

Work is well underway in section six between Kauri Point Road and Lindemann Road as activities take advantage of the dry summer weather. This includes areas of widening and full width reconstruction.

Construction work has also started on section eight between Sharp Road and Sargent Drive. You will see widening of the existing road initially. This is a long section so road users can expect to see lots of activity along here.

Road reconstruction work is currently being undertaken near the intersection of Works Road until approximately early April. This work is to improve safety at the intersection and will include permanent closure of the northbound passing lane due to safety reasons.

Approximately 100 people in the area attended a cottage meeting where this was discussed in January 2020 and a decision was made to close the passing lane. Road users entering and leaving Works Road by a right turn have expressed a risk from northbound drivers travelling in the fast lane. A wide shoulder will be retained for slow vehicles.

Other works taking place along this corridor of SH2 include Section 10 between Wainui South Road and Esdaile Road where you will see final touches of barrier installation. It is expected this section will be completed by March 2021.

Waka Kotahi and partner contractors do our best to keep journey times to a minimum and try to avoid having stop-go operations. We use roadside message boards, social media and local media to keep road users informed of potential delays. We thank you for your patience. You can also visit our website for further updates.

Site investigations kick off along SH2 Te Puna to Ōmokoroa

Ecological and ground investigations are now underway for Stage Two of the Takitimu North Link project, between Te Puna and Ōmokoroa.

Stormwater surveys, geotechnical investigations, and ecological and archaeological assessments will be carried out over several months, helping to inform the planning and design of the second stage of the new Takitimu North Link expressway.

A team of specialists will be testing the soil and strength of the ground, surveying vegetation, streams, checking out birdlife and looking for evidence of bats. You’ll see our drilling rigs, but we’ll also be using more low-key equipment to complete this work.

Preliminary site investigations for Stage One of the project (Tauranga to Te Puna), are near completion with some archaeological assessments currently taking place.

Taking a walk through the planned site

Takitimu North Link will provide residents and visitors to the Bay of Plenty with safer, more resilient access to one of New Zealand's growth areas. We're pretty excited about it, and so were those who came with us on a walk through the planned route.
