Parents newsletter - January 2025The winter term and the new year are a fresh start for many students. Your student may feel comfortable settling back into their routines, or they may need a little extra support for their wellness or academics. As classes begin, Carleton is here to support your student from their wellness to their studies. The new term is a great time to seek new opportunities. Your student can explore upcoming work opportunities and get ready for the Winter Career and Networking Fair on campus. The SOAR Student Leadership Conference is an excellent opportunity to develop their leadership skills and make new connections. Important Dates and Deadlines Monday, January 13, 2025: OSAP deferral deadline. Friday, January 17, 2025: Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) in full winter and late winter courses. Friday, January 24 to Sunday, February 2, 2025: Full fall and late fall term deferred examinations will be held. Friday, January 31, 2025: Last day to withdraw from full winter and the winter portion of fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Preparing for a Successful 2025 Welcome to the winter term—and if you’re a new Carleton parent, welcome to the community! The start of the term is always busy and there is plenty for students to do to prepare for winter term courses. Welcoming President Wisdom Tettey On January 1, Wisdom Tettey began serving as the 17th President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton University. President Tettey brings a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation, equity and student success. Student Registration Assistance Team For help with registration, building a timetable or navigating Carleton Central, the Student Registration Assistance team is available until Friday, January 17, 2025. The team offers in person, email and phone assistance to both new and returning students 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Ask Me – We’re Here to Help Your student can look for faculty, staff and student leaders wearing red Ask Me buttons to get all their questions about campus and Carleton answered at the start of the winter term. If they’re not sure about where their class is, how to navigate the tunnels or where to go for lunch, just Ask Me!
O-Train Line 2 Re-Opens The O-Train line 2 has re-opened with a phased return to service. Your student can use their U-Pass to take the train to campus. SOAR Student Leadership Conference The annual SOAR Student Leadership Conference is on campus on Saturday, February 1, 2025. At SOAR, attendees are challenged and inspired to develop their leadership skills through informative and interactive workshops and presentations. Each year, this one-day conference at Carleton includes a keynote speaker, expert speakers, student leaders and panel presentations. This year’s keynote speaker is Waneek Horn-Miller, a Carleton alumni and Mohawk Olympian. Tickets to attend SOAR are now on sale for $10.
Carleton University Board of Governors – Student Opportunity Is your student passionate about shaping the future of Carleton University? The Board of Governors is hosting a Board 101 Information Session where they can learn how they can make a real impact on campus governance while building their professional network. The sessions will cover the vital work of the board, how their involvement can drive change and eligibility criteria. Winter Career and Networking Fair Registration for the Winter Career & Networking Fair is open! Students can attend this important career-planning event on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, to discover who is hiring, learn what employers are looking for in new hires, and practice their networking skills—all without leaving campus. Coming Up at Career Services Career Services has lots of employer info sessions coming up in January! This includes a session with Konrad (a digital consultancy firm), an Ottawa 67’s STEM recruitment event and a networking event on navigating careers in mental health. On Campus Job Opportunities The Residence Desk is hiring for this summer and next academic year. There are both part-time and full-time positions available for students living on or off campus. Apply through eRezLife by noon on Friday, January 10, 2025. Campus Safety Services is now accepting applications for casual security guards for Student Safety Patrol positions during the 2025-2026 academic year. These part-time roles involve light security duties and provide a chance to engage with the campus community. Applications are due Friday, February 28, 2025.
Kick Off the Winter Term with CUSA Frost Week The Carleton University Students' Association has partnered with the Rideau River Residence Association and the Campus Activity Board to bring students Frost Week, a week full of fun. Your student can enjoy games day, carnival day, epic bingo, karaoke night and more! Winter 2025 Kinàmàgawin Indigenous Learning Certificate Registration Now Open The Kinàmàgawin Indigenous Learning Certificate registration is now open for winter 2025! Your student can join to learn more about anti-Indigenous racism in Canada and educational institutions, student supports and how to practice allyship. Multi-Factor Authentication To enhance the security of the Carleton University community, students must enrol in Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA). All undergraduate students have been sent a prompt to set up MFA when they attempt to log into Microsoft 365 services using their MyCarletonOne password. If your student has not yet accessed their cMail or Microsoft services, they should do so as soon as possible. If accounts are not enrolled in MFA, access will be disabled to protect the university’s IT system security beginning Monday, February 24, 2025. Health and Counselling: Group Support This winter term, Health and Counselling Services invites students to take the opportunity to connect with other students and learn skills to improve their coping and find support in a positive environment. Group sessions include improving speaking performance, a queer support group and many more. Educational Costs Estimating the cost of a year of study varies from student to student and depends on the program and number of credits you are registered in. Tuition and compulsory ancillary/miscellaneous fees include classes, U-Pass, academic, administrative and career support, lab and project resources, library access, athletic facilities and supplemental health plan.
