Niagara Region News Release

Air quality alert issued for Niagara Region

July 15, 2026

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an orange-level air quality warning for Niagara Region as smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario moves into the area. Poor air quality may persist into Friday. With a heat alert also in effect for the region, health risks may increase.

Niagara Region Public Health recommends the following during the orange-level air quality warning:

  • Stay indoors in a cool space.
  • Keep windows and doors closed (if you can still stay cool).
  • Do not perform strenuous activity outside.
  • Reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events.
  • If you must spend time outdoors, consider wearing a well-fitted respirator type mask.
  • Check in on others.

Poor air quality can affect everyone, but people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants, young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, people who work outdoors, and those who are experiencing homelessness are at greater risk.

Common symptoms of exposure to poor air quality include irritation of the eyes, nose, throat or lungs, coughing, shortness of breath, headache, or dizziness. People with existing health conditions may notice symptoms worsening.

The air quality alert will remain in effect until a cancellation notice is issued. For the most up to date information, please go to: AirHealth.ca or AirQualityOntario.ca
