How much should I be saving each month?

It really depends on your personal goals and situation—but a handy guide that works for many is the 50/30/20 rule.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 50% of your income goes on essentials (think rent, bills, food)
  • 30% on non-essentials or “wants” (like eating out, subscriptions, treats)
  • 20% goes straight into savings or investments

If saving feels tricky right now, this method can give you a clear structure and help you see where your money’s going.

Let’s say you take home £2,000 a month:

  • £1,000 would cover your needs
  • £600 for your wants
  • £400 towards savings

Once you jot down your spending and slot it into these three categories, it gets much easier to see the full picture. You’ll be able to spot where you might be overspending—and where you can make simple switches to stay on track with your goals.

Children under the age of 16 residing in the London Boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow, Kingston Upon Thames, Richmond Upon Thames, Wandsworth, and the Borough of Spelthorne, Surrey can open a Junior Savings Account with Thamesbank Credit Union. An existing adult member needs to endorse the account opening. Junior savers can save up to £5,000, giving them plenty of room to grow their savings.

When your child turns 18, their account automatically transitions to a full adult membership, granting them voting rights within the credit union. However, please note that those under 18 are not yet eligible for loans.

Words of wisdom

When it comes to managing money, a little financial literacy goes a long way. Here are some bite-sized words of wisdom to keep you inspired and on track.

1.    "Know where your money goes, or it will go without you."
Track your spending—it’s eye-opening and empowering.

2.    "Saving isn't about how much you earn, it's about how much you keep."
Even small, regular savings add up over time.

3.    "Budgeting is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went." – Dave Ramsey
A budget gives your money purpose.

4.    "Financial freedom starts with discipline, not income."
It’s not about making more—it’s about managing better.

5.    "Emergency funds aren’t optional—they’re your financial safety net."
Life happens. Be ready.
