Library Lovers' Day

Remember the wonder you experienced when you first discovered something as a child? Libraries are a place where we can get lost in an idea you are following, find an adventure in a book, discover more about an issue you feel passionate about or get help from someone about something you want to know. These are all the reasons (and more) to celebrate the valuable roles libraries play in our lives and to re-engage with our libraries and 'show the love' this Library Lovers’ Day.

Exhibitions

Life by the Sea - Heidi Hereth exhibition

Life by the Sea - Heidi Hereth

10 February - 9 March

Life by the Sea can be interpreted in various ways. It can refer to human activities such as fishing, swimming or sunbathing. It can mean the life of other creatures by the sea and in the sea. The sea itself can be imbued with life, particularly when majestic waves are crashing and water is surging, displaying its sheer majesty and energy. The theme expands to include not only the sea itself, but the surrounding coast with its rocky headlands and sandy beaches.

Waterworks - Neil Wilson exhibition

Waterworks - Neil Wilson

10 February - 9 March

Neil Wilson is a photo media artist who creates composite images combining photography and painting. These images are chiefly drawn from the natural environment and are a highly personalised response to the collection, reflection and representation of diverse political, environmental, spiritual and social issues. In Waterworks, Wilson draws from aquatic environments to create mesmerising and seductive imagery.

Local History - What's in a name?

Horatio Nelson in solder's uniform

As tempting as it is to assume that the origin of Bronte's name has something to do with Wuthering Heights, the truth is located in a far more exotic locale. Sicily doesn't seem to have much in common with Bronte at first glance, but that's where the name comes from - via Commonwealth naval hero Horatio Nelson.
