Click here The launch of a new foundation degree in sustainable horticulture designed to meet the needs of the industry and its future workforceAcross the horticulture sector there are changes afoot which are significantly impacting on the skills needed by the workforce both today and in the future. Technology is progressing rapidly and will change the skills required over the next decade. Adapting to climate change, improving biodiversity and the use of resources will require new approaches and strategies for the management of horticultural sites. In September 2023 a new foundation degree in Sustainable Horticulture Management, validated by the University of Greenwich, is being launched by Plumpton College to address the issues these challenges present. The course will deliver knowledge and skills in the foundation of horticultural sciences, key business and financial management, contemporary techniques and the integration of green technologies and sustainable strategies. Support payments rise again for organic growers Countryside Stewardship support payments for organic horticulture land management have been increased by 24%, to £471 per ha, while payments for horticultural land under organic conversion are up 17%, to £703 per ha. The Soil Association welcomed the improved support for organic production, with rate increases averaging 25% across farming sectors – more than double the 10% average increase in payments for the Countryside Stewardship scheme as a whole. Growers can apply for these organic conversion or maintenance payments via the scheme’s mid-tier options, which will be open for applications until August 18, 2023.
