Creating a shared space on the bridge deck

Work on the bridge deck is expected to be completed at the end of May and as the new bridge will be a shared space, it’s important that everyone using it – from those commuting, to those enjoying a stroll, e-scootering, or little ones learning to ride a bike – are safe. Read on to learn how we’ve designed the layout of the deck to ensure everyone can enjoy the space.

In order to help reduce speeding, benches have been placed on the deck in way that indicates to those travelling fast that this is a shared space and to keep an eye on their speed. The benches feature prominently in locations across the deck and are one of the calming measures being used to ensure user safety.

An anti-slip deck coating is also being applied in black and purple. The use of two colours will help different users of the bridge navigate the space with the black areas being for running, walking or riding, while the purple areas where the benches will be positioned, are for people to relax and enjoy the bridge as a destination in itself.

In total, three layers of anti-slip coating will be applied with the final layer put down just before the bridge opens. Each layer takes about a day to dry before it can be walked on, and the material used is like the coating on basketball and tennis courts.

How to build a bridge deck

Step one (top left): Place the concrete beams on top of the piers to create the base of the deck.

Step two and three (top right): Install the fascia panels on both sides and tie the steel bars together ready for the concrete pour.

Step four (bottom left): Pour the concrete on top of the steel bars.

Step five (bottom right): Install the balustrade along the edge and apply the anti-slip coating. Seating can then be installed.
