Ōtaki to north of Levin update – February 2023

Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority and local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga are working together to create a positive legacy for the region while we build a new, safer and more reliable State Highway 1 from Ōtaki to north of Levin.

Late last year, we lodged the Notice of Requirement and resource consent applications for the 24km highway and walking and cycling path with the regional and district Councils. Submissions are now open through the Horizons Regional Council until 28 February.

We are hosting a number of events this month where you can talk with the project team and keep up-to-date on the project.

February drop-in sessions

The Ōtaki to north of Levin project team is hosting several drop-in events throughout the region this month for those who want to know more about the new highway and shared user path.

We’ll have members of the team on hand to answer your questions about the new highway, what it’ll mean for moving around the area, and what it’ll be like to have the new highway in your neighbourhood.

Please join us at your local drop-in session - full schedule below.

Our events give you a chance to meet with us face-to-face. If you have questions between events, you can email us at O2NL@nzta.govt.nz or phone 0508 625 4636.

Lots of interest in January speaker event

The Ōtaki to north of Levin project team hosted around 130 members of the public at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō on 28 January 2023.

The team discussed the design of the proposed road (including local road connections), the RMA consents process, landscape and planting design, and the effects of the project and how they’ll be managed.

We’d like to thank everyone who came along, asked questions and talked with our specialists at the event. There were some really valuable conversations, and it was fantastic to see so many people.

State Highway 57 update

Last year we completed installation of side barriers and wide centrelines between State Highway 1 and Queen Street East along Kimberley Road and Arapaepae Road South, as well as a roundabout at the Queen Street East and SH57 intersection.

While we’re pleased that these safety improvements are now in place, we’re aware that there are still some ongoing issues with the pavement and chip seal in some sections. We’re working with the contractor to have these issues rectified as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience while we get these issues fixed.
