Welcome to our latest project update from the Tākaka Hill repairs team.

While major winter storms in late July have damaged some sites, we currently remain on track to have two lanes open by the end of year, with the project fully completed early 2022.

Following is the work we've completed during July:

  • Site 6 - The retaining wall is now 95% built and the new culvert will be installed across the road during the 7-night road closure later this month.
  • Site 7 - Installation of the large (1800 diameter) culverts has been completed. The new pavement  will be installed during the 7-night road closure later this month.
  • Site 9 - The retaining wall has now been completed to road level. The new pavement will be installed later this month.
  • Site 11 – The retaining wall is now 100% complete and the precast concrete panels are in place.
  • Site 13 - The retaining wall is 70% built, and the new culvert will be installed across road during the 7-night road closure at the end of this month.

The images below give you a glimpse into the progress being made beneath the road at each site - which is not always visible when you're driving.

Below you'll find more information about upcoming night closures so you can plan ahead. This includes an emergency closure next week to repair storm damage.

Plan ahead for upcoming 7-night road closures

Emergency works: Monday 9 to Monday 16 August, from 9pm to 5am each night
The road will be closed for seven consecutive nights to repair damage caused to Site 13 during the recent storm.

Planned works: Monday 23 to Monday 30 August, from 9pm to 5am each night
This 7-night planned closure is to install a large new culvert (pipe) at Site 6 to ensure stormwater moves efficiently through the sites, and to construct pavement at Site 7.

Planned works: Monday 6 to Monday12 September, from 9pm to 5am each night
This 7-night planned closure is to install a large new culvert (pipe) at Site 13 to ensure stormwater moves efficiently through the sites, and to construct pavement at Site 11.

These works are weather dependant.

As we reach the final construction stages further night closures are necessary to carry out essential drainage and pavement works. For safety reasons, and to minimise disruption to road users, this work must be done at night.

We'll let you know well in advance the dates for future night closures so you can plan ahead.

If you need access over the hill for night work or essential commitments, please email takakahill@nzta.govt.nz or call Kane Reihana on 027 886 4508. We will do our best to accommodate your needs, but cannot guarantee access.

Access is always available for emergency services throughout the closure.

Challenges of managing winter weather on site

Wild winter weather, in particular heavy rain, is something we keep a close eye on as it can have a huge impact on construction activities.

In late July, major weather events have occurred throughout the Tasman region, and work on Tākaka Hill was impacted, as well as other roads throughout much of the Tasman region.

Site 7 new culvert put to the test

On 18 July Site 7 was significantly tested, just three weeks after the new 1800mm culvert had been installed across the road. And it didn't disappoint!

Crew hard at work rectifying storm damage

The road was closed at 3pm while the crew organised additional trucks and resources to clean-up the storm damage. The road was able to be reopened by 9.30pm - a great effort by the team in horrendous conditions.

Volume of silt spilled across sites significant

Despite the clean-up effort, the sheer volume of silt that spilled across the road and into the sites requires more repairs before further work can continue. This includes the 7-night road closure next week to repair damage to Site 13.

Programme on track despite storm impact

Significant effort by the team is being put into cleaning up, stabilising, and repairing all the sites and getting back on track as soon as possible.

While the weather continues to have a major impact on work, as it is across the region, we have reasonable confidence that we'll be able to complete this work on schedule.
