Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to this update on the State Highway 1 Mangamuka Gorge slip repairs.

Heavy rain over 17-18 July caused several slips through the Mangamuka Gorge along State Highway 1.

Most of the road has been cleared to at least one lane, but a large slip on the northern side of the gorge is causing the closure of the road. At this site, an estimated 7000 cubic metres of material fell away beneath the road, leaving the road surface unsupported to the centreline.

Stage 1 – pile installation

The first stage of repair of the main slip is to stabilise the remaining road by installing concrete piles beneath the road and anchoring these into the underlying rock.

Around 20 of 49 piles up to 20m long have now been installed.

We expect to have this stage of work complete early in the new year.

We acknowledge the impact the road closure is having on local communities and businesses and are working as quickly as possible - 20 hours a day - to complete repairs.

Holiday opening details

The state highway through Mangamuka Gorge will be open from the weekend before Christmas to Sunday 10 January 2021. We will provide more exact timing in the next update.

Only light vehicles – vehicles requiring a class 1 driver licence and motorcycles – will be allowed through.

More information on class 1 licences

The road will be down to one lane in places and traffic management will be in place, including traffic lights at the main slip site.

Heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses must continue to use the detour route via State Highway 10.

Stage 2 – realigning the road

In the New Year the road will be closed again so the works team can cut into the hillside to realign the road and restore it to two lanes.

Once this stage is complete, by mid-2021, the road will be reopened to all vehicles, including heavies.

If there is any opportunity to open the road earlier, we will look at options.

Other slips

We are beginning work on the various other slips through the gorge, but should be able to provide two-lane traffic flow past most of these during the holiday period.

The exception will be slip 7 (pictured) at the northern end of the gorge. Traffic management will be in place at this site.

FAQs added to our webpage

Why are repairs taking so long? Why can’t vehicles go through in convoys?

These and other frequently asked questions have been added to the Waka Kotahi website at www.nzta.govt.nz/mangamuka.

Litter campaign

Waka Kotahi has launched a local campaign to discourage littering on Northland’s roadsides.

You may see signs placed around the north, and we will be erecting two of these in the Mangamuka/Mangamuka Gorge area once the state highway has been reopened.
