SH5 Tarukenga to SH5/SH36 Ngongotahā roundabout improvements

Activity on site is currently focussed at the SH5/SH36 roundabout where the free flow lane is closed to westbound traffic (Tirau/Hamilton) leaving Rotorua while we upgrade the slip lane.

All westbound traffic is using the existing roundabout for this turn. The slip lane will remain closed until the new roundabout is constructed.

Later next week road users will see a change to the lanes and road layout between Henderson Road (near the cemetery) and the SH5/SH36 roundabout. This will be clearly signposted and laid out, so road users know where to go. We’ll ensure you're informed ahead of any major work happening and do our best to minimise travel delays and disruption.

SH5 and SH30 Rotorua urban speed review

Public engagement on the State Highway 5 and State Highway 30 speed review in Rotorua closed in August 2020. Thank you to everyone who had their say. We have reviewed all your feedback and published a summary of the public engagement.

You can also read what others had to say on our interactive online map

Engagement helps us get feedback and local knowledge on how people use the road and their concerns. This helps when deciding if a speed limit change is the best thing to do to improve road safety, where new speed limits might begin or end, and if any other safety improvements might be needed.

The next step is formal consultation which will include our proposed speed limits for the corridor. We plan on sharing more details about this step with you in the coming weeks.

SH30 Eastern Corridor Stage One

We have now completed most of the work at the Sala Street intersection, which has alleviated a lot of the delays experienced last year.

In March we started work on improving the Puarenga Bridge underpass which will make this area safer and more user-friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. We expect these improvements to be complete by late-April. In the meantime, please use the signalised crossing at the Sala Street intersection.

We have shifted the temporary roundabout at the Tarawera intersection, allowing us to work on the area of road near the Good Eastern Tavern. We're on track to have the final signalised intersection complete and operational by June.

We are also in the final weeks of constructing the fourth lane between Allen Mills and Iles roads. Eastbound traffic should be using this new lane by mid-April.

We're pleased to say the Detailed Business Case for SH30/Te Ngae Road, from Iles Road to Rotorua Airport, is complete. We now have a Preferred Option for the corridor and are busy working on the finer details of the improvements. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts with us last year and helped shape this outcome.

We have split the project into three phases of work, based on what improvements are required immediately. Funding of $35 million is confirmed for the first phase of this project, with contruction expected to start later this year.

SH33 Te Ngae Junction to Paengaora safety improvements

Road users have been enjoying the safety benefits of the completed sections. Construction is now underway on the final sections between Maniatutu Road and Allport Road.

We’re continuing with the same improvements along the state highway: road widening to allow for a wider shoulder and a 0.8m wide centreline, installing side barriers at high-risk locations (where trees and other hazards can’t be removed) and relocating services.

While we juggle our programme with planned network maintenance, we expect to have this work complete early next year.

Have your say on Ōkere Falls shared path

We’re consulting with the community on a proposed shared path design between Hamurana Road and Ōkere Falls.

We faced a number of challenges when designing the shared path in this area, including limited space to work within, geometry of the road, and vehicle movements.

We’re proposing the following improvements:

  • Construction of a shared path, approximately 3km long and 2m wide, from Hamurana Road to Ōkere Falls Store / rafting drop-off area
  • Construction of four pedestrian islands in various locations along SH33 – providing a safer place to cross the road
  • New road markings to make it clear where people can park alongside the state highway
  • Improving sight distance visibility by removing excess vegetation
  • Installing roadside barriers or line marking in locations alongside the shared path to help separate traffic from cyclists and pedestrians
  • Approximately 0.5km of a 2m wide shared path between Hamurana Road to Mourea Bridge. This section is pending funding availability.

The shared path and pedestrian islands will be constructed within the designated road space.

In late March we will consider any feedback and finalise the design. Construction is currently scheduled to start late April/early May 2021.

If you'd like to provide feedback you can email bopprojects@nzta.govt.nz
