Peka Peka to Ōtaki corridor improvements

Connecting communities

30 May 2025

Ōtaki shared path now complete

Earlier this week the final link in the Ōtaki shared path was completed with the opening of the Waitohu Stream Bridge clip-on. Connecting with the previously completed Mackays to Peka Peka shared path, this means there’s now an off-road pathway linking from north of Ōtaki to as far south as Paekākāriki.

This series of shared paths and clip-ons create a safer, more enjoyable journey for everyone. By keeping walkers and cyclists separate from other road users, it limits the risk to pedestrians and cyclists from live traffic.

Cyclists, aye... horses, neigh

We’re hearing the Ōtaki River Bridge clip-on, which opened in March, is getting a lot of use, especially on sunny days and weekends. That’s great to hear.

We’d just like to remind you that both the Ōtaki River and Waitohu Stream clip-ons were built specifically for the use of pedestrians and cyclists. The design of the clip-on unfortunately doesn’t allow it to be used by horses. We encourage horse riders (and your noble steeds) to continue using the alternative options for making these crossings, like the signposted river access at Ōtaki River Bridge.

Have your say: Transmission Gully and Raumati Straights 110km/h speed limit consultation

We’d like your feedback on a proposed new speed limit of 110km/h on the Transmission Gully Motorway and Raumati Straights.

Transmission Gully has safety features that greatly reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a crash, like two lanes in each direction, and flexible median barrier between opposing lanes.

Safety improvements will be needed on the Raumati Straights section, to help support any potential increase in the speed limit, while Transmission Gully requires some surfacing works We’re currently considering safety improvements including some side barrier works, lighting upgrades, and other infrastructure improvements. These works would be dependent on scoping, design, and funding. By consulting on this section now, we can finalise a decision on appropriate speed limits quicker, once these works are undertaken.

Our website has more information on the proposed new speed limit and a form for you to share your feedback with us. To submit your feedback, complete the online form at www.nzta.govt.nz/tgspeed. Consultation closes 10 July 2025.

Ōtaki business precinct upgrade begins

We're working with Kāpiti Coast District Council to strengthen the district's resilience and improve connections for all forms of transport. This involves making this section fit for purpose as a local road.

We began work in Te Horo late last year and we’ve now started work in the Ōtaki retail precinct, carrying out pot holing to locate services earlier this week. The physical construction of the corridor improvements will begin the week following King’s Birthday. Works will be staged, starting at the north-west end of the road, near Mill Road roundabout.
