Preparing for the worst

The recent Mariginiup bushfire showed just how quickly and easily a bushfire can spread. This bushfire had a devastating impact, and the City continues to support affected residents through the recovery phase. With the risk of bushfires increasing, this may not be an isolated incident, but you can act now to prepare yourself, your home and your property for an emergency by taking few simple steps to:

  • Understand emergency warnings issued through Emergency WA
  • Know where to get vital information before, during and after a fire
  • Prepare your home and property
  • Create a bushfire survival plan, including an emergency survival kit.

Stay safe, connected during major emergencies

With Australia experiencing more extreme and frequent weather events, including bushfires, cyclones, drought and flooding, the National Broadband Network (NBN) is urging communities to be prepared for the potential loss of NBN services during emergencies.

Visit the NBN website to find out how to prepare for an emergency event where you may lose connectivity and what to expect from NBN during an emergency.

Water supply in a bushfire

In the event of a high-risk bushfire, leaving your property is the safest option, but if you plan to stay and defend your home, you must have an independent water supply and pumping capability. Typically, this requires water tanks with a minimum capacity of 20,000 litres as well as a pump and generator.

If your plan is to stay and defend during a bushfire, you need:

  • a high-level understanding of bushfire behaviour
  • your own supply of power, water, personal protective equipment and clothing
  • back-up plans in place.

It's also critical that you're familiar with all relevant information provided by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

BEN signs making City's beaches safer

Beach Emergency Number (BEN) signs help improve emergency response times in the event of a shark sighting, attack or other beach emergency.

Each sign has a unique letter and number code linked to the co-ordinates for the location so emergency services can quickly and accurately locate where you are and how to get there.

Please familiarise yourself with the BEN signs at your favourite beaches so you know how to get help quickly in an emergency.
