Vulnerable powerful owl spotted in Mount Cotton

During a recent Land for Wildlife property visit at Mount Cotton, the owners and Council's Environmental Partnerships Officer had the privilege of encountering a magnificent powerful owl, its large talons firmly gripping its prey.

Reaching an impressive size of up to 65cm, this bird of prey has a distinctive face with captivating golden-yellow eyes. You can listen to the deep, slow 'whoo-hoo' call of the powerful owl here.

Sadly, the powerful owl is classed as vulnerable and faces various threats, including predators like foxes and habitat fragmentation, particularly the loss of essential areas that hold old growth hollow-bearing trees crucial for breeding.

Land for Wildlife properties, proudly part of our Environmental Partnerships Program, play a vital role in ensuring the survival of not only the powerful owl but also numerous vulnerable species across Redlands Coast.

By joining forces, we can take action to safeguard the remarkable presence of the powerful owl and other invaluable wildlife species. If you are eager to learn how you can help, check out our Environmental Partnerships program.

We'd also love to know if you have heard or spotted a powerful owl. Please record your sightings on iNaturalist and you'll be contributing data valuable to its conservation.
