Making SH22 safer between Drury and Paerata

We are committed to addressing safety concerns on SH22 Drury to Paerata as the area continues to grow. We are continuing to work on safety improvements along SH22, these will be delivered in a staged way over time to support both short term and long term growth in the area.

We have identified a range of short-term safety improvements that are currently being progressed and identified for funding through the Safe Network Programme and include:

  • a new right turning bay for Jesmond Road – this was completed in May 2019.
  • safety improvements for SH22 and Great South Road intersection – we are pleased to confirm that improvements will be made to this intersection to make it safer. All going to plan construction for this will start early next year thanks to the generous support from Drury South Crossing development.
  • a review of the speed limit - last year we spoke to the community about speed on this road and we are pleased to announce we will now move to formal consultation.
  • the Glenbrook roundabout – we are pleased to confirm that the Safe Network Programme has secured funding approval to progress this to the next stage: starting detailed design for the roundabout.
  • safety improvements – we are pleased to confirm that the Safe Network Programme has secured funding approval to progress this to the next stage: starting detailed design for median safety barriers and side safety barriers at high risk areas along this road.

Meanwhile work continues on the longer-term plans for SH22 that are being developed as part of the wider planning for the future by the Supporting Growth Programme.

Safer speeds for your roads

People in your community have told us that the speed limit on SH22 between Drury interchange and Paerata feels too high to be safe.

What we heard

In the last couple of years we have asked for your feedback on current speeds on this stretch of State Highway 22. Thank you to the hundreds of Aucklanders who gave us their thoughts which we have summarised here.

What we’re now proposing

We’ve looked at this feedback alongside our technical analysis of what is the safe and appropriate speed for this road. We are now coming back to the community to formally consult on the following proposed speed limits:

SH22 Drury interchange

  • Reduce the speed to 60km/h for the 70km/h section from the south-western end of the Hingaia Stream Bridge to 100m south of Burberry Road.

SH22 Drury Interchange to Paerata

  • Reduce the speed to 80km/h for the 100km/h section 100m south of of Burberry Road to 430m north of Crown Road.

SH22 Paerata

  • Reduce the speed to 60km/h for the 70km/h section 430m north of Crown Road to the intersection of SH22/Lough Bourne Drive.

You can provide feedback:
- online via nzta.govt.nz/auckland-speed-reviews
- or email it to auckland.speed.reviews@nzta.govt.nz
