Corpus Christi College

Easter Term 2021

Rachel Lawson joined the College in March as our new Director of Development & Alumni Relations

From the Development Director

"I am delighted to have joined a beautiful College with such a welcoming community. From speaking with the Master, Professor Christopher Kelly, the Fellows and many other Corpus members, I know the past year has challenged us all in different ways. With this newsletter, I would like to convey my best wishes to all our alumni and friends and to thank you for your continued support during this time.

The gates of Old Court were closed during the pandemic, but College has been as busy as ever, with plans drawn and redrawn to continue to deliver excellence in teaching and learning, albeit at a distance. From the Development Office there is plenty to share and plenty to do. These are exciting times, with the launch of new initiatives such as the Bridging Course. If you’d like to find out more about our future plans, do get in touch."  Continue reading

Innovative Bridging Course enters second year

Last September, Corpus became the first Cambridge college to launch a full-length residential Bridging Course. We welcomed 16 new undergraduates from under-represented backgrounds for an immersive three weeks in College to help prepare them for their studies. Thanks to the extra places we created for the Course, the College in 2020 has already met its diversity and widening access targets set for 2025 by the Office for Fair Access.

The results are published weekly.

So, is there life on Mars?

Corpus Junior Research Fellow Dr Claudia Bonfio is eagerly awaiting data from the recently landed NASA Mars rover Perserverance. Claudia’s research focuses on the chemical precursors to very early biological systems and Perseverance is looking for evidence that the Martian crater Jezero may once have housed an environment conducive to the emergence of life — in much the same way it might have emerged on earth.

Retooling to fight COVID

Inspired by a medical mystery at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Gates Scholar and PhD student Isabella Ferreira switched her focus from HIV reservoirs to investigating immune responses to new variants of COVID-19 and the contribution of different mutations to infectivity.

Food glorious food – catering staff delighted to be back on the job

Students, staff and Fellows were all pleased when the Corpus kitchens reopened this term, but nobody was more relieved than the kitchen and catering staff, who have been furloughed since early December 2020. Now they're back with a new menu focused on local and seasonal produce.

Parker Library loans items to British Museum Becket Exhibition

The British Museum exhibition Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint marks Becket's tumultuous journey from a merchant's son to an archbishop, and from a revered saint in death to a 'traitor' in the eyes of Henry VIII more than 350 years later. The Library has loaned three precious items from its collection for the exhibition.

Finally, and hooray! Invitations and registration forms will be sent out from the Development Office shortly. Let this be the start of a 2021-2022 programme of rich and varied alumni events.
