1. Steel beams span gully

Story
Story

Steel beams are being installed on the Mangaonua Stream Bridge – the longest bridge on the project. They are being lifted into place in sections and bolted together. Longer spans on this bridge require steel beams. The other 16 bridges on site have reinforced concrete beams.

2. Bamboo feeds red pandas

Bamboo cut down on site has been delivered to Hamilton Zoo to feed red pandas, chimpanzees and other animals. Our project ecologist came up with the idea, and a quick phone call to Hamilton Zoo sealed the deal.

3. Push to complete Powell’s Road underpass

Our earthworks team are adding lime to ash soil to complete the approaches either side of the Powell’s Road Underpass before winter sets in. Adding lime reduces the moisture level in the soil, bringing it within the levels required for compaction. This means fill can be spread and compacted quickly.

4. Traffic switch after Fieldays

The traffic switch that will take SH1 traffic off Cambridge Road and onto two new lanes at Tamahere will take place after the Fieldays in June. The section of Cambridge Road north of Cherry Lane will then close so the expressway route can be excavated through this section of the old highway.

Cherry Lane and Bollard Road residents will be provided with a sealed temporary access onto the new highway lanes.
