Discover, Explore, Connect and Experience – Bringing Real-World Examples to Business Studies

Visit to Gilmours in Petone by Upper Hutt College

As Hutt Valley Education to Employment Coordinators, we are fortunate that our work helps connect employers and schools in the Hutt Valley to help students to discover, explore, connect and experience what the world of work is like.

Last week, Gilmours owner, Matt Humphrey, hosted Scott Crookston, Business Teacher at Upper Hutt College, and his students, for a tour of their workplace. The students have been studying motivational theories in business and were interested in learning real-world of work examples about Gilmours training opportunities for staff, performance reviews, internal promotions, and staff rewards, as well as Health and Safety procedures and induction and mentoring for new staff.

The information provided by Matt, as well as getting the opportunity to look around Gilmours, will help the students to gain a better understanding of how the different departments work together to encourage and motivate their staff. A huge thank you to Matt and his team for welcoming Upper Hutt College into their business and taking the time to engage with the students.

If you’re a local employer, who is interested in participating in our Education to Employment programme, please contact Amanda Walters at Amanda@hvchamber.org.nz

Workplace Communication and Literacy & Numeracy Training - Designed for your Company’s Specific Needs

New Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce member Dr Dorothy Nightingale has started her new business to help employers in our region support their staff to get the skills they need to be even more productive at work.

In many workplaces, there are hardworking, highly motivated employees who are held back by inadequate communication skills and literacy & numeracy skills. When these skills are improved and applied in the workplace, there is greater business productivity. Workplace Communication and Literacy & Numeracy Training programmes may include a range of modules all designed to meet the professional goals of your business. Workshops can be designed to fit into a period of weeks or block courses. All programmes are designed, managed and facilitated by Dr. Dorothy Nightingale.

One employee that had been through one of the customised training programmes that Dr Nightingale runs said, “I have gained more confidence in communicating with Managers about Health and Safety. I now feel like I have the skills to write and verbally contribute to improving health and safety in our workplace. I realise now the importance of communication across the business. It helps make all our jobs easier and we are more productive. I have learned more reading strategies which helps me better understand written processes at work.”

Opportunity for a Hutt Valley Business - Naenae Post Office - Earthquake Strengthening and Refurbishment Main Contractor

Hutt City Council (HCC) has acquired the former Post Office in Naenae, Lower Hutt for conversion to a community centre as part of its programme ‘Whakatupu Ngaengae’ to rejuvenate the town centre. Despite being vacant since 2015 the building is still in relatively good condition. It does, however, need strengthening for better seismic performance and we need to replace the main roof, upgrade the façade, repair and paint the exterior and fit out the interior spaces for multiple and flexible use by the community.

HCC is looking to partner with an experienced building contractor with expertise in seismic upgrades, the refurbishment of flat roof coverings, glazed facades, external painting and internal fit-out including HVAC, electrical and plumbing services.

Contractors with suitable experience should submit a capability statement of no more than 15 pages explaining their organisation, staff and equipment resources, management skills, experience and safety record giving examples of completed projects and a minimum of three referees.

This opportunity has been created in the Government Electronic Tender System (GETS). You can access the information here.

New Date - Cyber Resilience, Risk Remediation and Cyber Insurance Seminar

Protecting your business from cyber attacks is more than having cybersecurity tools or an IT team. A successful cyber attack could cost you operational downtime, loss of data, reputational damage, and lost revenue.

Being cyber resilient means knowing what needs to be protected, what risks you face, and having plans for threat detection, response, and most importantly, knowing how to recover as rapidly as possible from cyber incidents.

There will be a panel Q&A session after the presentation where representatives from IT Works, Intelligensia and Crombie Lockwood will be available to answer your questions about:

  • Cyber resilience
  • How to secure your environment to ensure you have the greatest protection
  • How to keep your staff educated and aware of the risk
  • How to ensure you have adequate coverage in the event of a cyber breach.
