Disaster assistance activated for small businesses and non-profit organisations impacted by severe flooding and Tropical Cyclone Narelle

8 April 2026

The Albanese and Finocchiaro Governments have activated more than $12.4 million in support for small businesses and non-profit organisations in the Northern Territory that have been impacted by severe weather, flooding and the impacts of Ex-Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

The support package is being jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Eligible small businesses and non-profit organisations in the following areas will be able to access grants of up to $10,000 to support recovery from the direct impacts of the disaster:

  • Katherine Town Council area
  • Coomalie Community Government Council area
  • Litchfield Council area
  • Roper Gulf Regional Council area
  • Victoria Daly Regional Council area
  • West Daly Regional Council area
  • West Arnhem Regional Council area
  • Belyuen Community Government Council area
  • Wagait Shire Council area
  • Greater Darwin Unincorporated Area
  • Cox–Daly Unincorporated Area
  • Marrakai–Douglas Daly Unincorporated Area

The assistance includes:

  • Small Business Grants – to support eligible businesses recovering from the direct impacts of Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle and associated flooding.

  • Asset Assistance Grants for Non-profit organisations – to support eligible organisations where assets have been significantly damaged and there is no reasonable prospect of obtaining commercial finance.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the Albanese and Finocchiaro Governments were working together to support impacted businesses and non-profits to recover.

“We know a lot of small businesses and non-profit organisations have borne the brunt of persistent severe weather and flooding over the summer,” Minister McBain said.

“These organisations are often the backbone of their communities. This latest assistance will help them to recover faster.

“The Albanese Government is in it for the long haul when it comes to helping impacted communities to recover from natural disaster.”

Northern Territory Acting Chief Minister Gerard Maley said the assistance would provide practical support to businesses and community organisations across impacted areas.

“Small businesses are the backbone of many Territory communities, and this assistance will help eligible operators deal with the impacts of Ex-Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle and ongoing flooding,” Mr Maley said.

“Community organisations are also critical to local recovery. This support will help eligible non-profit organisations repair or replace essential assets so they can continue delivering services to their communities.”

The Northern Territory Government will administer the program through the Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations.
