Nelson/Tasman state highway planned roadworks

Saturday 25 October to Friday 31 October

24 October 2025

Underslip site near Coal Creek Bridge, State Highway 6, on Thursday 23 October 2025

Kia ora and welcome

Kia ora,

Welcome to the latest Nelson/Tasman state highway planned roadworks update.

This week our crews have worked around the clock responding to incidents on the state highway network due to the wet, windy weather.

An underslip impacting the road means State Highway 6 remains closed between Kohatu and Murchison this afternoon. Our team is working to build a single lane to restore connectivity later today. We're also removing fallen trees on State Highway 6 between Hope Saddle and Kohatu. Sections of the highway will reopen this afternoon as work progresses, with the road fully open this evening.

Our teams remain committed to progressing scheduled works wherever conditions allow. However, recent weather events mean some delays are unavoidable. Thank you for your understanding as we adapt to these changing conditions.

Labour weekend roadworks

Contractors will shut down sites from midday today, Friday 24 October, returning early morning Tuesday 28 October, for the Labour weekend holiday period. Some long-term sites, or emergency works locations like SH6 near Coal Creek Bridge, may have ongoing restrictions in place. Ensure you check Journey Planner for the latest updates on road conditions before you travel.

The information outlined below is current as at 1:15pm on 24/10/2025.

The images below show the flooding across State Highway 65 Shenandoah Highway on Tuesday 21 October and State Highway 6 near Coal Creek Bridge yesterday afternoon (Thursday 23 October 2025).

SH6 Nelson to Blenheim

SH6 Whangamoa Saddle

Resilience works continue between Rai Valley and Hira. Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h reduced speed limit is in place 24/7 (with the exception of Labour weekend). There are five sites to complete as part of this project, however only one site will be worked on at a time to minimise disruption. Plan ahead for delays of up to 10 minutes when travelling between Nelson and Blenheim while this work is underway.

Read our traffic bulletin for more information.

Upcoming work on SH6 Rocks Road

Next weekend we’ll begin important recovery work along State Highway 6 Rocks Road in Nelson.

From Sunday 2 November through to Friday 21 November stop/go traffic management to be in place Sunday to Thursday nights, between 8pm and 5.30am. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes during this time.

Our team will work above the road carrying out rock scaling, vegetation removal and removal of the old drape netting along the southern section, closest to Tāhunanui Beach. Stop/go traffic management is necessary during this stage of the programme to ensure the safety of all road users.

Once the cliff face is clear we'll install new mesh netting that will be anchored in place. This will be completed under a stop/stop set up, where traffic in both directions is stopped temporarily. We'll provide more information on the dates of this work soon.

We expect work on the southern section of the cliff face to be completed by March next year – weather permitting. We’ll then move into Stage Two of the programme which will involve working on the northern section.

This is necessary to protect this heavily used route and the 22,000 road users who use it daily, by ensuring the highway (and cliff face above it) is more resistant to weather events, slips and rockfalls in the future.

We'll work as quickly and efficiently as we can, however we understand working through summer will be disruptive at times.

We’ll continue to share information about what’s happening and where, in this e-newsletter and on our Nelson, Tasman & Marlborough Facebook page.

Upcoming night closures on SH6 Whangamoa Saddle

We’ll be closing State Highway 6 Whangamoa Saddle, between Rai Valley and Hira for three weeks of night time resurfacing and maintenance works in November as our top of the south summer roadworks continue. The closure will be in place from Sunday 9 until Friday 28 November, Sunday to Thursday nights between 8pm and 5:30am.

We'll reopen the road once a night to let traffic through. If you want to travel overnight you’ll need to be at the closure points - the weighbridge in Hira, and on the Rai Valley straight at Rai Engineering & Mechanical, by 12:30 am. Please plan carefully to ensure you meet this schedule.

It’s important we complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible which is why we’ve planned this work to be carried out at night, when there are fewer vehicles using the road. During the closure roadworkers will reseal sections of the highway, clear drainage, replace a culvert, carry out resilience improvements, and other general maintenance work to ensure the road is in good shape before the summer holidays.

We know this will be disruptive but given the narrowness of the road and the heavy equipment being used for resurfacing, the highway must be closed to keep you and roadworkers safe. If you want to travel between Blenheim and Nelson overnight you can detour via State Highway 63 and St Arnaud. This will add an extra 45 minutes to travel times.

Read our media release for more information.

SH6 Nelson to Greymouth

SH6 between Kohatu and Murchison to reopen later today

Our team is working hard to open State Highway 6, near Coal Creek Bridge, to one lane later today. Work continues to build a temporary lane to allow traffic, including heavy vehicles, to pass through the site. The aim is to reopen this section of State Highway 6 this evening under stop/go traffic lights and a 30km/h temporary speed limit.

On State Highway 6, between Hope Saddle and Kohatu, tree removal and clean up work continues today. Sections of the highway will reopen this afternoon as work progresses, with the road fully open this evening.

The photo below shows work underway onsite this morning (24 October 2025) to build a temporary lane that will allow SH6 near Coal Creek Bridge to reopen.

SH6 Kohatu

Work to rebuild a one kilometre stretch of State Highway 6 from the end of the Kohatu Bridge towards Mead Bridge continues. Other recovery work to fix damage to the existing stopbanks and river protection structures caused during the June/July floods is also being completed. Work is carried out on weekdays (Monday - Friday), from 7am to 5pm, under stop/go traffic management. Expect 15 minute delays when passing through this work site. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit applies 24/7.

Read our traffic bulletin for more information.

State Highway 6 chipsealing

Despite the weather our chipsealing programme got underway earlier this week on State Highway 6 and will continue next week, with the exception of Labour Day Monday 27 October.

Chipsealing works will be carried out at the following locations between 7am and 5pm. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will apply during work hours and will remain in place until sweeping and line marking is complete.

  • SH6 Tunnicliffe Bridge to Clark River Bridge, Motupiko - Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 October.
  • SH6 Glenhope - Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 October.
  • SH6 Owen River area - Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 October.
  • SH6 Claybank - Thursday 30 and Friday 31 October, and Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 November.

SH6 rockfall resilience work at Granity Narrows and O'Sullivan's Junction

Rockfall resilience work continues at two sites near Murchison - one at the Granity Narrows between Kawatiri and Owen Junction, and the other near O’Sullivan’s Junction close to the intersection of State Highways 6 and 65.
From midday Friday 24 October, both sites will open to two lanes over Labour Weekend, but with a 50km/h temporary speed limit. Please take care as there’s some pavement damage and potentially debris on the road.

From 7am Tuesday 28 October, crews will return to work at both sites and the recent stop/go traffic management and 30 km/h temporary speed limit will resume 24/7 until the end of May 2026. Plan ahead for 15 minute delays. At times, traffic will be held in both directions when controlled rock clearing is underway. The road will be open to two lanes over the Christmas / New Year holiday period.

Read our media release for more information.

Due to multiple resurfacing, resealing, recovery and resilience sites on State Highway 6 between Richmond and Murchison from now until Christmas, road users must allow extra time for their journeys. Plan ahead and check Journey Planner before travelling for up-to-date information on delay times at each site.

SH60 Nelson to Golden Bay

SH60 High Street, Motueka - between Inglis Street and Fearon Street

Kerb, channel and footpath replacement work originally scheduled for completion on Friday 31 October has been extended following the recent wet weather. This work is now scheduled for completion on Friday 14 November. Work will continue on Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm (with the exception of Labour Day on Monday 27 October). During this time two lanes of traffic will be maintained but some parking spaces will be unavailable.

SH60 Tākaka Hill, Riwaka side, approx. 4 km uphill from Riwaka Valley Road

We’re continuing recovery on a number of sites on the hill. Stop/go traffic lights and a 30km/h temporary speed limit remains in place at all times. Please plan ahead for delays of up to 20 minutes when you're travelling over Tākaka Hill.

Hope Bypass update

On Monday the Prime Minister and Transport Minister announced the next phase of the Roads of National Significance (RoNS) package. These are major transport projects that, once completed, will support economic growth and productivity, reduce congestion, improve safety, support housing development, and provide a more resilient roading network.

One of the RoNs within this announcement is the Hope Bypass. We’ve completed the Investment case for the Hope Bypass, which has been endorsed by the NZTA Board. The investment case informs the decision to invest in the project.

We’re now starting the detailed design phase of changes between SH6 Salisbury interchange (SH6/Link Rd roundabout) to SH60 Appleby Highway and SH6 Gladstone Road intersection.

We will also proceed with geo-tech investigations, surveying and other technical assessments, which will lay the groundwork required for future construction.

This next phase includes engagement with iwi partners and impacted landowners. We will also hold community drop-in sessions so that people can learn more about the project.  Dates for these drop-in sessions will be confirmed shortly.

Learn more about the Hope Bypass on our website.
