The proposed speed limit changes on State Highway 60

Formal consultation on safer speed limits

In late 2019 we spoke with the community about making State Highway 60 (SH60) between Upper Tākaka and Tākaka safer. We have read all the feedback we received and considered these insights alongside our technical analysis of what is safe for this road.

We are now formally consulting on a proposal to change the speed limit between Paines Ford and Tākaka. This consultation outlines the proposed changes and provides an opportunity to tell us if there are any other factors we should consider when making our decision.

What we are proposing

We are proposing a speed limit of 80km/h, starting 100m southwest of Paines Ford bridge and ending 270m south of Motupipi Street.

Paines Ford is a popular recreation spot with people parking near the road, and regular pedestrian and cyclist activity to and from Tākaka. Nearby is the Golden Bay Community Health Centre and intersections between SH60 and Central Tākaka and Dodson Roads. The section of SH60 through Paines Ford has a temporary speed limit of 80 km/h in December and January.

We will be consulting on speed limits for Upper Tākaka, and between Upper Tākaka and Paines Ford, once we have spoken to the community about speeds and safety on remaining sections of State Highway 60, and once the Tākaka Hill repair works are complete.
